Polymer Additive Manufacturing – Not just for prototypes Not all polymer 3d printers were born equal. You may be familiar with rough surface finishes, poor material options and run-of the-mill, low-quality prototypes, but the Additive Manufacturing (AM) industry has taken huge strides in material and machine development since the first polymer 3d printers came on the scene in the 1980’s. The number of technologies that now fall under the 3d Printing (or AM) umbrella and the quality of these is constantly increasing, as is the opportunity to use 3d printing for production components too.

P

olymer 3d printing is now regularly used to create robust engineering solutions for aerospace, automation, automotive, medical, and many other industries. Industrial-grade machines using laser sintering to additively manufacture components are among the most common used for serial production of AM parts. The beauty of this technology (laser sintering) is the absent need for support structures and the subsequent minimal requirement for post processing and finishing of parts. The result is a greater surface finish and part quality direct from the build process. The automotive industry is making large transitions in exploiting additive manufacturing and all the benefits it has to offer, with many car manufacturers making huge investments to bring the technology in house to develop and produce parts faster. Due to the fact there is zero tooling needed for 3d printing, the inherent design freedom allows for rapid iteration of prototypes as well as smaller batch production, without the high cost of moulding on in applications where the number of vehicles being produced is lower - examples of this being supercars, hypercars and race cars (Formula 1 etc.).

There are also many other instances where 3D printing can be used to improve a design and reduce its complexity for manufacture. For example, in robotic grippers where the ability to integrate complex channels alongside fixture areas and touch points for the objects to be picked reduces the need for assembly and complex machining strategies. This means that channels can be designed for functionality rather than machinability. Moving parts and part marking can also be built in to designs to reduce the need for further assembly or etching/tampography once a part has been manufactured. With the technology and materials now on offer, polymer 3D printing opens many doors to companies looking for solutions to complex design needs, tighter lead times, and cost reduction. AM is now an appropriate solution for serial production challenges that other technologies present and further machine and material developments will continue to disrupt conventional manufacturing as time goes on. Double-double: A paradigm shift in composites design and manufacturing

Quad laminates in collections of 0, ±45, 90 plies are more than 60 years old, and can be replaced by double-double (DD) in [±F/±Y] that are field-based with 4-ply thick building blocks, that can be repeated to become homognized laminates that are naturally symmetric, can be anisotropic in both in-plane and flexure, with ply drops in singles, positioned on the exterior surfaces so there are no defects in the laminate interior, and thinner laminates for lightly loaded areas that can save 50 percent weight, and greater cost savings. A simple card sliding technique was applied in the tapered stringer seen in Figure 1 by Erik Kappel, of DLR at Braunschweig. Weight savings of 41 percent with tapered feet and toes for strong bond to any base panel. Being a homogenized DD, no void and warppage were found. Similar application to a fuel tank shown in Figure 2 that also saved 38-40 percent weight.

The technology of DD is more rational, and the needed skills and knowledge can be acquired at the online Composites Design Workshop XXII, January 2428, 2022. New topics include a new e-book, 3D trace, master charts for buckling, more tapered components fabrication and test data, and unexpected features (negative Poisson’s ratio, and zero strain) from anisotropy over orthotropy. All made possible by DD laminates, which are as conceptionally simple as metals, but superior in their mastery over directional properties and to use tapering to reduce weight to less than 1/2 of aluminum. No more same old, same old, and famliar party lines: no need for mid-plane symmetry, balanced laminates, 10 percent rule, ply contiguity, 45 degree max angle differene, blending, many archaic philosophies and self-inflicted complexities. Our approach is based on innovations by practicing engineers, based on first principles in their books and journal publications, and supported by design tools, manufacturing technology and test data. There is only one material constant (trace) for laminate stiffness, not 4, 6, or 18; one laminate isotropic failure criterion with no need for ply-by-ply; oneaxis layup for multiaxial with no cross plying; one DD for entire component, not dozens of elements; and fully automatable processes with no internal discontinuities from exterior ply drops, and zero warping from homogenization. AZM150 SOLENOID INTERLOCK: SLIMLINE DESIGN WITH 360 ROTATING HEAD AND 1400 NEWTON CLAMPING FORCE O

The AZM150 solenoid interlock can be combined with three different actuators for different installation situations: a straight actuator for sliding doors, an angled actuator for large revolving doors and a movable actuator for smaller revolving doors. One of the plus points of the interlock is the rotating actuator head which can be locked simply by putting the lid on rather than a screw fitting. The rotating actuator head has two feeder slots to enable a range of installation positions and approach options. This makes the interlock really flexible to use. The AZM150 is an electromechanical design which can be combined with high safety standards. The interlock comes with a low coding level as standard but is also available with an optional high coding level. The benefit for users: In accordance with ISO 14119, a higher coding requires fewer measures to prevent the bypassing of locking mechanisms, such as fitting out of range or in a concealed position. Windows 11 versus Windows 10 IoT:

Amplicon discuss the advantages and differences

T

he launch of Windows 11 is imminent; many in the industrial market will be evaluating what to use for their next project, this article gives a brief look at the benefits and/or the challenges presented by these two Operating systems. What is Windows 11? Windows 11 is the successor for Windows 10, it uses the same core architecture but with a range of functional and cosmetic differences, designed for use in a desktop environment. What is Windows 10 Enterprise IoT LTSC? It is generally known as Windows 10 IoT, but in a nutshell Windows 10 IoT is a stripped back version of Windows 10, with all the extraneous features such as Cortana, games etc. removed to make the overall footprint smaller. What are the key differences between Windows 11 and Windows 10 IoT? Footprint – Windows 10 IoT has a much smaller footprint when installed allowing for smaller drives. Cost – Pricing is dependent on which Processor is being used, meaning that Windows 10 IoT can be a more cost effective solution for Atom or low I core based systems. Productivity – Windows 11 offers the ability to easily layout desktops with a range of windows and when a second display is disconnected and then reconnected it will remember where those windows were and what was displayed.

Microsoft Team’s integration allows for easy communication between colleagues and customers. Compatibility – This is a tricky one to quantify as Windows 11 hasn’t been released into the public domain. However, Windows 10 IoT does can sometimes have compatibility issues with custom software, not often but it does happen. Windows 11 is built on the same core architecture as windows 10 but there are some differences which could give rise to compatibility issues in the short term. Longevity – For applications where you require long term OS support Windows 10 IoT is by far the better choice with availability of 10 years from launch without any changes other than patches and security updates. Windows 11 will go through a cycle of major yearly updates including feature updates. Hardware requirements – To install Windows 11 the motherboard must have UEFI secure boot and a TPM 2.0 module whereas

Windows 10 IoT has very few specific hardware requirements. Legacy – Windows 11 is 64bit only, 32bit software will still run under Windows 11 but 32bit processors are not supported, Windows 10 IoT supports both 64bit and 32bit Windows, processors and software. However, it may not fulfil many of the requirements of the industrial market which typically demands long term availability and support for a wide range of hardware Windows 10 enterprise IoT 2021 is due to be launched before the end of this year giving another 10 years of Windows 10 support which will likely secure Windows 10 IoT as the preferred OS for the industrial market.

How Pump Selection Can Affect Total Cost of Ownership While considerations should be made on the total cost of ownership (TCO) when specifying a pump, the most important criteria should be that it is fit for purpose, to ensure optimal productivity. Selecting the wrong pump can prevent the pump from performing to its full potential and lead to unnecessary downtime, wear, maintenance and energy consumption, product damage or reduced uptime of the process. Before: Build-up in the pumps affected the flow, requiring 2-3 hours to clean each pump and equipment being replaced every 6 months. After: SEEPEX transfer pumps offer reliable performance, and ease of maintenance due to their simple pump design.

W

hen selecting a pump, factors such as the viscosity of the product being conveyed, flow rate or the operating temperature should also be considered. Not all pump technologies are equal. Some are designed to handle low viscosity, others for highly viscous and high solids content products. Shear-sensitive media, for example, requires a pump with low shear action. In wastewater treatment processes, polymers are used to thicken sludge by attracting all suspended fine particles to produce larger groups of solid materials through a process called flocculation. These flocculants are often extremely viscous and shear-sensitive once hydrated. Incorrect pump selection can affect the metering accuracy, damage

the polymer structure and potentially the efficiency of the thickening process. Wrong selection affects process performance A Water Company was using two multi-stage vertical centrifugal pumps to handle polyelectrolyte for use as a flocculant agent and transfer it from a ‘make-up’ tank where the powdered polymer was mixed with water to their daily service tank. However, build-up around the volute casing and impellers in the pumps severely affected the flow which required the pumps to be dismantled and cleaned – a process which took 2-3 hours per pump, and the pumps being replaced every 6 months. The use of centrifugal pumps to transfer viscous media reduces their

performance due to factors such as the effect of viscosity on the impeller, reduction in flow and the increase in horsepower required. But also their pumping action generates high shear, making them unsuitable to handle shearsensitive products. To address these challenges, SEEPEX was engaged to offer a costeffective pumping solution. The right pump for the duty To meet the application’s requirements, SEEPEX selected progressive cavity pumps from their BW range for transferring the viscous polymer. Simple and compact for quick and straight forward maintenance.

KMF invests over £1m in new equipment to increase efficiency

Precision Sheet Metal firm KMF has invested in two new Laser Profiling Machines which will increase cutting speeds, reduce operating costs and allow a greater range of materials to be processed.

MF has ordered two 3030 (L95) New Generation machines. The machines are state of the art, fibre lasers from Trumpf and join a full array of high end Trumpf sheet metal processing equipment. Laser profiling is the first physical stage in the processing of sheet metal-based products and so any gains are felt throughout the manufacturing process. The new lasers are estimated to improve average run times by up to 50% and potentially result in 60%+ reductions in the average machine running cost.. The £1.2m assets have been ordered to replace two existing older machines. The existing machines comprised of an early technology fibre machine and a traditional Co2 laser, both of which have been operational in a 24/7 capacity since early 2012. Commercial Director Keith Nicholl said: “Faster machines means that we can continue to offer a competitive solution to our customers at a time when resource costs are rising. As well as being faster the machines are more

comprehensive and more accurate which allows us to build on our reputation of producing consistent quality products in high volumes. We’ve had a very positive first half of the year and we’re continuing to grow, so we need to invest in newer, better machinery to accommodate our customers and their ambitions.” The new lasers also have more capacity to cut through heavier gauge and a larger range of sheet-based materials. Compact, electromagnetic benchtop marking system with integrated control unit The compact benchtop marking system FlyMarker mini 120/100 STATION is the perfect addition to the already proven FlyMarker mini series. The dot peen marking system is an all-in-one device, which means that the control unit is directly integrated in the housing. Due to the electromagnetic driven marking pin, no compressed air supply is needed. Besides the attractive price-performance-ratio, the marking system convinces due to its easy handling. The benchtop marking system must only be set on the work surface and be connected to the power supply – now the work can already start. The large marking area of 120x100 mm is equipped with a switchable LED-lighting, which makes the adjustment of the workpieces to be marked very easy. The SICK Ruler3000 sets a new standard for high-speed 3D image quality in an easyto-integrate, pre-calibrated device. Wait or Hold?

Warehouse and production operations use buffer systems when their processes include a wait or hold step, material handling process requires reserve inventory to manage fluctuating demands, or when there’s a requirement for a quick and accurate order consolidation process before shipping. Without the proper buffering system in place, warehouses often waste space, and experience longer travel and search times than necessary. Using automated technology will require up to 85% less floor space than a traditional rack or shelving system. Common buffer systems such as miniload and bin-shuttle systems manage buffer inventory well but they come with a hefty price tag. While these solutions work for larger operations, they are unable to scale down to handle smaller volumes cost effectively. Vertical Buffer Modules (VBMs) are uniquely designed to maximise storage capacity and manage items in a compact footprint. They buffer 500 - 2.000 totes and are both, cost and energy efficient. Implementing the LR 35 for automated buffering provides multiple benefits

such as buffering for small parts in a fast and efficient manner. Eliminates operator travel time and minimises storage footprint. There are two types of buffer that can be utilised by using the LR35: Consolidation Buffer: To consolidate orders quickly and accurately before shipping or packing the use of a the LR 35 using Java Machine Interface (JMIF) software and automated conveyor connection is a Kardex recommended solution. Order bins are scanned, stored, and retrieved when needed without any human intervention. When all items for the order are in the consolidation buffer, the JMIF software notifies the host system and starts the retrieval when needed. Production Buffer: The LR 35 is used in production to buffer goods between individual work steps, avoiding costly interruptions in the operating processes. It’s designed to absorb surplus production and to decouple the process sections, ensuring the highest possible production rate. Production components are mostly transported with an automated conveyor system connected

to the LR 35 or with automated guided vehicles (AGVs). For additional picking, the LR 35 can be equipped with a turntable. Companies without buffer storage may experience waiting times between individual steps. In addition, many warehouses lose valuable space when manually buffering customer orders ready for dispatch in the shipping area. Manual storage on pallets or in static shelves is chaotic, takes up more space than necessary, and requires longer travel distances and search times for personnel. The implementation of an automated buffer system like the LR 35 for intermediate storage and consolidation of orders and goods ensures safe, fast, and smooth material flow in the production and shipping departments. STERTIL CLOSED DOOR DOCKING SYSTEM ELIMINATES TEMPERATURE AND HYGIENE PROBLEMS Stertil Dock Products has an enviable reputation for developing proven handling solutions for manufacturing companies, distribution centres and warehousing sites throughout the world. Sludge Cake to Liquid in Minutes Yorkshire Water Knostrop is a large wastewater treatment plant servicing a growing population of 800,000 people. The decision was taken to rebuild the works with standard digestion and a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant. The contract was given to build a facility to process indigenous sludge and imported dewatered sludge cake.

EEPEX had previously installed 12 large progressive cavity pumps on site, pumping sludges to an incinerator which had come to the end of its asset life. Over many years these pumps had proven to be reliable, and SEEPEX had built a well-established relationship with both the end user and their logistics hub.,

Reliable operation under extreme conditions Knostrop is a sludge treatment centre that not only produces indigenous sludge but also receives five daily loads of dewatered sludge by truck five days a week from satellite sites in West and North Yorkshire. Each load had to be processed in under an hour to prevent vehicle backup. The application required a pump to receive imported dewatered sludge from a large reception belt facility and process 28 tonnes of 30% DS cake with high grit and rag content into a 6% DS homogenous mixture. The resultant total volume after mixing was 150m3/h which was then fed to the digesters. The pump had to run up to eight hours a day and achieve a constant dry solids mix and operate reliably under these extreme conditions.

selection software and algorithms. Choosing the correct amount of dilution/side stream liquid to thin the cake is important to achieve the 6% DS required to optimise digestion. Two large TVE open hopper pumps with an auger feed screw were selected, these were fed from the imported sludge reception facility. Each pump was designed to handle a capacity of 150m3/h of back mixed sludge and pump 30% DS dewatered sludge cake in the absence of dilution liquid. A homogenous mix was achieved within the pump hopper by the auger feed screw and appropriately positioned dilution connections. A reliable 6% DS mixture was delivered by monitoring the pump’s speed and discharge pressure by controlling the amount of dilution liquid being added to the pump hopper.

The removable compression zone significantly reduces downtime as blockages caused by large debris can be removed and the pump put back in operation within hours without dismantling the pump and extensive downtime. The solution delivered by SEEPEX is a more cost-effective alternative to the traditional multi-step back mixing approach which would involve further tank storage, additional pumps and blending.

To assist with maintenance, the pump was fitted with rotor joint access (RJA) enabling the pump’s compression zone to be moved over the stator. This allows access to the rotor universal joint and gives the ability to remove debris without involving extensive maintenance work, e.g. removing pipework and the pump’s stator.

S is for Super Glue Whether you know them as Instant Adhesives, Instant Glue, Super Glue, CA or more scientifically as C5H5NO2, Cyanoacrylate is the technical term known by most adhesive experts and it’s been around since the early 1950s. Invented, by accident, by Dr Harry Cooper who was trying to make clear plastic gun sights for Allied soldiers in WWII. The initial product was deemed to be “too sticky” but nine years later he found the potential of a product that would quickly bond a variety of substrates with only a tiny bit of moisture present. And, as its founding name suggests, just a one square inch bond of this product will hold around one tonne. Super indeed. Cyanoacrylates will bond a wide range of substrates like metals, plastics, wood, glass, porous surfaces and sometimes (maybe accidentally) even human skin. It is a key industrial product used in automotive sub-assemblies, aerospace components, appliance part assembly, electronics, construction, and consumer products. A household staple for DIY quick fixes or hobbyists. Less known applications include crime scene investigations to dental lab model building, tissue bonding and mortuary operations. This adhesive technology is composed of an acrylic resin or monomer that evolves to a plastic state after curing. Unlike some adhesives that cure by evaporation, cyanoacrylates instantly cure in the presence of moisture which reacts instantly on exposure to air, even with a small amount of relative humidity. It only bonds the surface where moisture is present, the reaction generates heat that forms a tough resilient bond instantly at ambient temperatures. But not all cyanoacrylates are equal. In the UK, Bondloc formulates 3 main systems - Ethyl, Methyl and Alkoxy grades which cater for most applications. Each grade has unique characteristics; varying viscosities, ultra-fast or slow set times, high-temperature resistance, rubber toughened, non-blooming

and low odour or gelled formulations for vertical or overhead bonding applications. Lift Turn Move Expands GIS Chain Hoist Stock Lift Turn Move (LTM) has expanded its stock of GIS lightweight D8 chain hoists of 500kg and 1,000kg capacity, for mobile use in the entertainment sector. GIS-owned LTM is the UK supplier of the Swiss-made electric chain hoists, control systems, and additional material handling equipment. As riggers continue to demand the lightest possible chain hoists, Wirralbased LTM is receiving heightened demand for the LPML and higher capacity LPL chain hoists—both capable of lifting over 40 times their own weight. The LPML weighs a modest 12kg (20kg with 18m lifting height) and delivers a lifting capacity of half a ton. The LPL meanwhile lifts 1,000kg, and when fully equipped for an 18m lifting height weighs in at just 39kg (23kg net weight). The hoists were originally introduced as a supplement to the popular GIS D8+ hoists, used for static suspension of loads over people. Hoists to the standard D8 specification may also be used for static suspension of loads, but it is essential to have a secondary suspension, such as a load arrestor, for example. The hoists are manufactured in accordance with EN14492 and DIN56950. David King, managing director at LTM, said: “Both hoists are highly robust yet still light, thanks to the aluminium housing and covers. The design of the chain hoists in accordance with protection class IP65 (as standard) protects them against dust and

water. This makes them ideal for both mobile and outdoor use. Efficient material flow thanks to Kanban components The Kanban principle is usually used to optimise material supply in assembly and production processes. Workpieces and assembly material are supplied to the individual process stations via flow racks with roller tracks or roller conveyors. This ensures fast and efficient provision of material in accordance with production control. By avoiding unnecessary lifting tasks, there is also less strain on the employees. Roller tracks are used in flow racks or Kanban racks to ensure that the handling cases and cardboard boxes are transported safely. They are available in lengths of up to 4500 mm. The roller spacing is either 33 mm or 49.5 mm. In the case of longer roller tracks or higher loads, it is advisable to place profiles underneath for support. The rollers are mounted on steel axles and are available with and without flanges. This application uses mk’s RBS-P 2065/2066 gravity roller conveyor which is ideal for use as a roller carrier transporting material flows between picking stations. Depending on the total load and the required spacing, rollers with dimensions from 20 to 50 mm can be selected. An inclination of 1–2° usually ensures a reliable component feed. Over longer lines and steep inclines, it is possible to reach high speeds. In this case, the kinetic energy requires a damped deceleration. The mk roller conveyor system with gravity drive (RBS) is typically used in industrial applications for semi-

automatic interlinking at picking stations or kanban shelves. An extensive selection of different roller types makes the system extremely flexible and suitable for a wide range of applications. The conveyors are available in both straight and curved configurations. The roller diameters of 20, 40 or 50 mm ensure that

both large and small workpieces can be transported reliably and without interruption. The longitudinal slots in the profile beams can be used to attach side rails, stands, sensors and other accessories. Products can be transported along a decline either by hand or using gravitational force. A slope of 1 to 2° is usually sufficient for transporting products with gravitational force. PPMA Show 2021 celebrates great success as it leads the way to build back business The UK’s largest processing and packaging machinery event returned to the NEC, Birmingham (28-30 September) following the postponement of the 2020 Show. Hailed as a great success by exhibitors and visitors, over 250 exhibitors and 1,250 brands showcased the latest innovations in smart manufacturing, processing equipment and packaging solutions. The event attracted a solid audience despite the fuel crisis that no doubt affected visitors plans. Richard Little, Show Director said, “Notwithstanding the impact of the pandemic on all live events, the PPMA Show has once again proved to be a successful event for both visitors and exhibitors. We’re thrilled to have delivered our first live show since 2019 and evidence is that buyers have visited our event with active projects in mind. Improving line speeds, efficiency and automation of lines has been of primary interest with manufacturing companies having the joint challenge of labour restrictions and increased demand for packaged goods from retailers. It’s great that the PPMA Show will help make a contribution to building back business.” EXHIBITORS SEE THE VALUE For the exhibitors at PPMA 2021, the calibre of visitor and quality of leads were significant positives: “Our stand attracted a good number of visitors; most importantly, the quality was excellent too, with key decision makers such as Heads of Engineering and Engineering Managers all coming by to speak to us. 2D/3D laser profile sensors now offer larger measuring fields up to 290mm by 300mm Precision sensor manufacturer Micro-Epsilon has extended its scanCONTROL 30xx range of laser profile sensors (laser scanners) with two larger measuring fields now available. With Micro-Epsilon’s Configuration Tools software, more than 40 measurement programs with a total of more than 90 evaluations are available. The programs are transferred to the SMART sensor, which performs the measurement, evaluation and output in standalone mode. High volume OEM applications The scanCONTROL range includes the scanCONTROL 25x0 series designed for high volume OEM industrial measurement applications. With its compact design, versatility and high signal stability, the sensors offer an excellent priceperformance ratio and good all-round capabilities. Profile speed is up to 2000 Hz with three measuring ranges and is available with Blue or red laser technology, as well as a range of accessories that include protective housings, different cable lengths and interface adapters. Overcoming the rare earths shortage with the circular economy A report by Adamas Intelligence predicts that if the global rare earth industry continues to exploit these resources in the same way, in three to five years demand will outgrow supply. This is worrying news for manufacturing, as a scarcity of rare earths would affect the production of high-tech products like electric vehicles and robots. Here, Neil Ballinger, head of EMEA at automation part supplier EU Automation discusses the importance of rare earths in manufacturing and how a circular economy model can help limit their use. According to the author of The Structure of Rare-Earth Metal Surface, rare earth elements that we use today were born in a supernova explosion around ten billion years ago. They are in many products that are part our daily lives — inside fluorescent light bulbs, in the hard drives of PCs, mobile phones, electric vehicles and many other everyday products. Physically, rare earths are not scarce. They are even more common in the earth’s crust than many other metals such as gold, uranium, or tin. However, they are considered rare because their mineable concentrations are less common than for most other ores. Since there is no way of reproducing them artificially, we have only a limited supply of these materials and no alternative to them can be found. Applications of rare earths Featured with unique magnetic, catalytic and optical properties, rare earths are widely

used in many high-tech and low-carbon technologies, from hard disk drives, electric vehicles and fibre optic cables to missile guidance system, medical devices, and clean energy technologies. Five rare earth minerals, tantalum, silver, lithium, gallium and indium, are widely used in modern technologies. For example, tantalum has been commonly used in the electronic capacitors in computers and mobile phones for its energy-storing capacity. Owing to its low failure rate, it has also been used in automotive and aerospace electronics, atomic energy and wind turbines. Another important rare earth mineral, gallium, is used in its liquid form for human machine interfaces (HMIs), screens and solar panels. Since it has a low melting point but a high boiling point, it is used in gallium arsenide (GaAs) and gallium nitride (GaN) compounds in semiconductors for its heattransfer and cooling properties. In short supply The complicated recycling process and environmental impacts of these materials is one of the reasons why rare earth minerals are in short supply. Some minerals like gold can be extracted from legacy technology through recycling. However, it’s more difficult to recycle rare earth minerals

because the process, known as smelting, is very energy-intensive, may produce harmful emissions, and requires further downstream separation processes. The fact that nowadays people own more technology items but don’t know how to reuse or recycle them is also contributing to the scarcity of rare earths. According to an Ipsos MORI survey commissioned by the Royal Society of Chemistry, 51 per cent of UK households have at least one unused electronic device. Of these, 82 per cent have no plans to recycle or sell their devices. Hoarding redundant tech has become even more common during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many people shifted to remote work and education. Rare earth elements are used to produce high-strength permanent magnets that have enabled the production of consumer electronics, such as mobile phones and laptops, as well as automation technologies adopted in manufacturing. For example, servo motors rely on magnetic materials containing neodymium and dysprosium. If no measure is taken, the rapidly growing demand for magnet rare earths like neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium and terbium might exceed their supplies in the next two decades. Circular economy To contribute to limiting the global use of rare earths, manufacturers could consider replacing their traditional linear economy model with a circular model. In the circular economy model, products and materials are recovered and regenerated at the end of their service lives. That being said, when automation parts that contain rare earths break down, sourcing obsolete or reconditioned parts could be a more sustainable solution. MACHINERY PROTECTION SYSTEM MEETS DEMANDS OF TOUGHEST AUDITS FOR TURBINE UPGRADES The ability to quickly identify issues affecting the performance of rotating plant as well as being able to optimise dynamic behaviour is vital to all plant engineers. IET YWE: Young women engineers make national final and get set to inspire more girls to join the industry To celebrate Ada Lovelace Day, six young female engineers have been announced as finalists for the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s (IET) Young Woman Engineer of the Year Awards 2021. These prestigious engineering industry awards celebrate women working in modern engineering – and aim to help change the perception that engineering is predominantly a career for men by banishing outdated engineering stereotypes of hard hats and dirty overalls. As well as highlighting female engineering talent, the IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year Awards seek to find role models who can help address the UK science and engineering skills crisis by promoting engineering careers to more girls and women. Just 14.5 per cent of those working in engineering occupations are women (source: Engineering UK). 2020 Young Woman Engineer of the Year, Ella Podmore, said: “The IET’s YWE award has completely changed my life. Ciara carries out engineering research projects in the areas of astrodynamics and space mission design, working with industry and policy makers to design space systems that can help support life on Earth. She also teaches university courses and supervises student projects in space system design, to support the education and development of the next generation of engineers. Ciara’s public engagement aims to make complex ideas accessible to everyone, through hands-on examples, podcasts, radio interviews, written articles and public talks.

Dilani Selvanathan is a Junior Software Engineer for Herotech8, where she works alongside the technical delivery team to support growing technical requirements and helps build the products and services. Dilani recently completed a Software Engineering Degree Apprenticeship with the BBC, where she worked on a variety of projects and learnt about the different aspects of Software Engineering. Dilani is a STEM Ambassador and took part in the STEMazing programme, giving online interactive sessions to primary schools. She is also a WISE role model, promoting young women in STEM. Eftychia Koursari is a Senior Civil Engineer for Amey Consulting, specialising in scour, the main impact of climate change on infrastructure, whilst also undertaking part-time PhD Research on scour at the University of Glasgow. Effie is developing innovative scour monitoring and prediction tools and methods, protecting infrastructure, whilst also aiding in the response to the Climate Emergency. She is part of Amey Consulting’s Carbon and Climate Change Working Group, as well as the Women’s Engineering Society’s Climate Emergency Group and a member of CIRIA’s steering group, producing the new engineering manual on scour. Effie is an active STEM Ambassador and has been named one of the Top 50 Women in Engineering for 2020 and was also awarded the Women Leaders Association Rising Star in STEM.

Lauryn Jayes is a Building Services Engineering Apprentice for Arup, specialising in mechanical engineering. She designs and coordinates building services systems for commercial and residential buildings and is on course to become Assistant Mechanical Engineer post-graduation. Lauryn dedicates her time to promoting women in STEM careers, ensuring everyone has good access to strong female mentors within the industry. She was awarded the Nottingham Post Women in Business Apprentice of the Year in 2018.

Nipuni Karunaratne is a Digital Technology Model Factory Manager at Rolls Royce Plc, where she manages and leads a team of experts who are responsible for delivering and improving advance analytics, using artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to deliver a major digitalisation programme. In 2019, whilst being at Rolls Royce, Nipuni started her own Research & Development company with a focus in fourth generation industry solutions. Nipuni is actively involved in STEM activities, helping the younger generation by mentoring, coaching and inspiring. She has been a motivational and STEM panel speaker in many leading events worldwide and was elected in 2019 as the UK chair for the Gender Diversity Network at Rolls Royce.

UK launches world-first breakthrough landfill wastewater technology which slashes operating costs by nearly half A ground-breaking onsite landfill wastewater (leachate) thermal treatment and separation process called LAT™ (Low temperature Ambient pressure Technology) has demonstrated a 48% reduction in operating costs and a 70% reduction in energy usage at Viridor’s Broadpath landfill site in Devon. Now commercially available, LAT™ is set to change the way local councils and landfill operators manage leachate forever. LAT™ uses low-grade onsite waste heat or renewable energy sources which considerably reduce energy usage by up to 70% while cutting carbon emissions. Local communities also benefit from better air quality due to the reduction of road tankers currently used by many operators to truck raw landfill wastewater to remote offsite treatment facilities. Over one year, using LAT™, Viridor’s Broadpath landfill site is set to save the equivalent emissions of nearly one million car-miles. Existing global leachate treatment technologies consist of outdated, energy-hungry processes which contribute significantly to climate change. LAT™ challenges these techniques head on by removing the need for traditional leachate treatment processes: Reverse Osmosis – membrane type solutions that cannot effectively operate beyond moderate water recovery levels (little beyond 50%), and Thermal Boiling Solutions that use boiling water techniques and pressure vessels to treat leachate. To date, most research in the field has focused on incremental improvements in base technologies rather than seeking a step

change solution in the treatment of leachate, both in landfill and across other water intensive processes. LAT™ takes a whole new approach to return up to 90% of water to be reused and/or recycled, onsite and at new levels of efficiency. Mark Hardiman, CEO of LAT Water said: “We’ve been running the pilot at a 10 m3/day demonstration trial for six months at Viridor’s Broadpath landfill site in Devon and the results speak for themselves. We have also been operating a 120 m3/d LAT™ in China for the past eighteen months, so we know that LAT™ is scalable. We’re now making LAT™ available to all landfill operators and local councils across the UK on a lease basis, which reduces the CAPEX hurdle and shortens the ROI”. The use of waste heat provides net carbon savings as well as putting to use heat sources which would otherwise be polluting the environment and contributing to global warming. Product concentrate can be treated within existing discharge consents, without the need for the costly addition of new permits. LAT™ is a vital technology in the decarbonisation goals of landfill operators and local councils while delivering a significant return on investment (ROI) through efficiency savings. The pilot has been partly funded by the department of Business Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), as part of their Industrial Energy Efficiency Accelerator (IEEA). The programme is managed by The Carbon Trust with supports from Jacobs and it provides funding for energy efficiency process technologies, alongside incubation and commercialisation support. Tim Rotheray, Innovation Director of Viridor commented: “The future of the landfill industry depends on managing the legacy issues of the site. More than 50% of the costs for us related to the disposal of the leachate and by reducing these costs and recovering the resources from the leachate, we take an important step towards a circular economy. We are hugely excited to be working with LAT Water on this game-changing technology and look ahead to substantial cost and efficiency benefits in the years to come”. Paul McKinney, BEIS IEEA Programme Manager at the Carbon Trust added: “LAT Water has demonstrated a step change energy efficient solution for treating contaminated water which could form a key technology within the UK’s drive to reduce energy use and consequently achieve reductions in carbon emissions.” The LAT™ process makes use of waste heat which would otherwise be discharged into the environment, as the key energy source to drive the process. Combined with the reduction in diesel fuel used by reducing the number of tanker movements, and more energy efficient separation technology, the process is set to shake up the wastewater management sector as a whole.

Monitor objects easily with ifm’s measuring light grids The new OY51xx measuring light grids from ifm electronic provide a fast and convenient way of checking the size, orientation and even the shape of objects in intralogistics applications.

Ideally suited for ensuring that objects are correctly positioned for safe transport on conveyor systems and for many other applications, the light grids provide high resolution for accurate object detection. And thanks to their IO-Link interface, they are easy to set up and integrate without the need for complex programming. Using multiple infrared beams with a spacing of 10 mm, ifm’s new measuring light grids can precisely determine the height and width of pallets and boxes, while simultaneous evaluation of multiple beams allows the orientation of the objects to be determined, as well as providing information about their contours. Depending on the application, the distance between objects can also be measured. In addition, the light

grids automatically capture diagnostic information based on operating hours, which can be used as an aid for planning needs-based maintenance. Measuring light grids in the OY51xx range are currently available in six versions. The smallest of these has 15 beams and a measuring height of 140 mm, while the largest has 255 beams and a measuring height of 2540 mm. Maximum range for all versions is 10 m, and all can simultaneously measure five values. Data from the light grids is transmitted digitally via an IOLink interface which is also used for parameterisation.

Achieve competitive gain with NSK TL spherical roller bearings

N

SK TL series spherical roller bearings are active across the world in a host of papermaking machinery applications. Set against conventional spherical roller bearings with standard heat treatment, this advanced product is proving increasingly popular due to a number of distinct benefits that include enhanced inner ring strength, longer service life and dimensional stability at high operating temperatures. The original development of TL (tough and long life) bearings was to solve a specific problem: inner ring fractures of spherical roller bearings with tapered bores, particularly when used with a relatively high interference fit. This issue can occur on dryer cylinders (including Yankee dryer rolls) and calender rolls, where super-heated steam passes through the hollow journals of dryer rollers and the centre of bearings. The subsequent temperature difference increases the interference fit, producing a tremendous increase in hoop stress (circumferential force) on the inner ring that enhances the potential for cracks.

Part of the reason for this high performance was the residual stress (after heat treatment) present in the crack-tested inner rings made from TL specification steel. Residual stress was notably higher in TL steel test pieces in comparison with those made from bearing steel featuring either standard heat treatment or bainite treatment. Residual stress works in the opposite direction to hoop stress, serving to supress this unwanted force.

Proven advantages

NSK knew the key to providing a successful solution hinged on the development of a bearing that could better withstand hoop stress. The company therefore set about creating the TL specification based on a steel with a formulation for casecarburising, but using a special method of heat treatment. From a metallurgical standpoint, the raceways are harder than conventional bearing steel but the core remains soft. This contrast delivers the shock resistance needed to prevent fracturing, as well as the necessary surface hardness for long bearing life.

In fatigue life tests, the TL series bearing all demonstrated far superior performance against the other bearing material types when comparing Weibull plots of the test results.

The popularity of TL series bearings is rising across Europe. For instance, a well-known Russian company in the paper industry that wanted to modernise its cardboard-making machine has recently taken delivery of TL series spherical roller bearings for 108 drying cylinders (drive and non-drive side). Excellent performance and product characteristics were the predominant reasons behind the purchase decision. Many TL series bearings are also in service within the drying sections of paper and cardboard-making machines at other plants in Russia, including for a felt roll application.

Benchmark tests The resistance of inner rings that meet the TL specification is higher than the resistance of inner rings made from bainitic steel or standard bearing steel, as demonstrated in a series of benchmark fracture tests. The tests involved subjecting inner rings to a radial load of 2000 kg at a

Notably, the rings made from bearing steel, some with standard heat treatment and others with bainite treatment, fractured under hoop stress of 400 MPa after 1 x 107 revolutions and 7 x 107 revolutions respectively (on average). In contrast, the TL specification steel did not fracture under hoop stress of 430 MPa, even after 3 x 108 revolutions. The TL rings also marginally outperformed those made from carburised steel with dimension stabilising treatment.

Another significant characteristic of the TL specification is higher surface hardness of the raceway in comparison with bearings made from bainitic steel or case-hardened steel. Measurements of TL specification steel revealed a hardness of 710-720 HV (60.5-61.0 HRc). This value compares favourably against bearing steel with dimensional stabilised treatment (690700 HV, 59.5-60.0 HRc), bearing steel with bainite treatment (670-680 HV, 58.5-59.3 HRc) and carburised steel with dimensional stabilised treatment (680-700 HV, 59-60 HRc). NSK´s proprietary material heat treatment technology also serves to support dimensional stability at high temperatures, as demonstrated by further tests. Bearings made from TL

specification steel (at 150°C bearing temperature) showed a negligible rate of dimensional change (around 0.002%) after 10,000 hours - less than bearing steel with dimension stabilising treatment (at 130°C) and far less than bearing steel with standard heat treatment.

Ultimately, NSK TL specification bearing steel provides 60% more hoop stress resistance and five times the fatigue life of bearing steel with bainite treatment, and 180% more hoop stress and twice the fatigue life of bearing steel with standard heat treatment. These performance advantages translate into higher productivity and genuine competitive gain for users.
