AWARD WINNING PRESSURE SENSOR RAISES THE BAR

T

he innovative design features and benefits of a robust pressure sensor have been recognised with the Innovations Showcase Award which was recommended by a panel of experts at the recent Process Expo event in Chicago. The award, within the Dairy Product category, was given to sensing and instrumentation specialists BAUMER for their PP20H pressure sensor. The sensor prevailed against the 17 finalists due to its wide range of features ensuring outstanding performance in challenging hygienic applications. A senior product manager at Baumer confirmed that features such as a condensate resistant silicon measuring cell providing exceptional precision across the entire temperature range, combined with an IO-Link interface, were pivotal to the performance of the sensor and to securing the award. An IOLink interface is the latest trend for these types of sensor hence its incorporation into the PP20H sensor. However, Baumer pushed the boundaries to ensure additional benefits for customers, such as additional analogue output which when combined with digital IO-Link interface, offers users even more flexibility than other pressure sensors. The result of these features means that during commissioning of the sensor, users benefit from all the IOLink advantages ensuring simplified sensor parameterisation whilst still allowing optimum process control by the sensor via the 4-20mA analogue output. Furthermore, the IO-Link means users can call up additional process data such as the pressure of the measurement cell, or the temperatures of the pressure sensor and even the microchip in the central processing unit.

10|

Access to this information allows for crucial investigations, such as whether an unusual temperature rise has occurred in a container which may indicate a defect or faulty dosage of ingredients in a tank. As high temperatures may decrease the service life of the sensor or other system components this acts as an important early warning for the need for preventative maintenance, one of the promises of Industry 4.0. The PP20H sensor also exceeds all standards in terms of robustness as its measurement cell is completely sealed, even during relative pressure measurement. This prevents the ingress of warm and humid ambient air, which in certain applications may precipitate with low process temperatures, for example in milk or ice cream processing. At the same time however, the sensor must be ‘open’ to the surroundings to enable users to determine the difference to the ambient pressure. To resolve this Baumer engineers devised a unique solution by placing a barometric pressure sensor in the back of the sensor housing which measures the reference pressure of the environment via an opening. This design ensures an actual silicon measurement cell in the front of the sensor which remains hermetically sealed. This means the PP20H sensor is not only suitable for CIP (Clean in Place) and SIP (Sterilisation in Place) processes, but also in applications where sudden changes in process media temperatures can occur. The compact PP20H sensor covers a wide media temperature range from -20º to 125ºC without the need for a cooling line, so less space is needed for installation. Also, a wide variety of applications can be covered by just one sensor model ensuring cost and space savings. For more information click here.

ENGINEERING UPDATE

Making lifting equipment more affordable Lifting equipment specialist, Konecranes, has welcomed the introduction of the tax superdeduction initiative as a massive boost for UK industry. Under the scheme, announced in the Chancellor’s March budget, companies can claim 130% capital allowances on qualifying plant and machinery investments made between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2023. This upfront super-deduction will allow companies to cut their tax bill by up to 25p for every £1 they invest. Firms will also benefit from a 50 per cent first-year allowance for qualifying special rate assets, including long life purchases. The policy has been introduced to encourage investment and promote UK industrial recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated lockdown.

Konecranes’ RENTALL package is helping to make the acquisition of new and state-of-the-art lifting equipment more affordable. The launch of the HM treasury scheme comes at a time when Konecranes has been introducing its own initiatives to promote industrial investment and make the acquisition of new lifting equipment more affordable. In addition to flexible finance options and extended credit arrangements, the company has also launched its RENTALL programmes. RENTALL represents a packaged approach to operators’ material handling requirements, combining the lease of the lifting equipment with service regimes, maintenance plans, spare parts and remote performance monitoring. The equipment and support are provided for a fixed term and for a regular monthly payment, providing predictable fixed costs for the material handling system and its maintenance. It also eliminates large upfront investment for improved cash flow. The initial crane specification process is simplified as Konecranes tailors each RENTALL agreement to the lifting capacity and operations required, including any special processes.

RENTALL is available for material handling applications of up to 10 t. The scheme not only allows users to invest in new technology, but also allows stateof-the-art smart technology features to be incorporated, boosting productivity and enhancing safety. RENTALL may also incorporate Konecranes’ TRUECONNECT® remote monitoring digital platform, which provides a realtime overview of crane performance and safety status. Such data can be used to improve lifting processes and highlight preventative service and maintenance requirements. RENTALL has been designed to be a totally flexible solution, allowing customers to future proof against changes in material handling requirements. The package provides the option to upgrade equipment, technology, smart features and software at any time during the agreement period, to meet different operational needs. Paul Bartlett, Konecranes’ UK Industrial Cranes Sales & Operations Director,

Email: sales.uk@konecranes.com 12|

stated: “Brexit and the UK’s emergence from the COVID-19 lockdown are creating significant business opportunities for many companies in the logistics, industrial and manufacturing sectors. Inevitably, some operators will need to invest in new and smarter material handling solutions to take advantage of such opportunities.” He added: “Konecranes has responded by introducing flexible finance options and the RENTALL scheme, which will make the acquisition of lifting equipment and associated services more affordable. Subject to meeting the qualification criteria for the tax superdeduction initiative, companies may also make significant additional savings. In short, there has been no better time to purchase new and upgraded material handling systems. Konecranes will not be offering specific advice on the tax super-deduction scheme and we are recommending that companies planning to take advantage of the programme should consult with appropriate financial professionals.”

The nuts and bolts of confident bonding. Bondloc is an ISO 9001:2015 certified UK manufacturer of industrial adhesives and sealants with over 2000 adhesive formulations in their portfolio. The business was built on anaerobic adhesives over 25 years ago and this core range still accounts for over 40% of their UK sales. But what’s the secret of this little genie in a bottle and why is anaerobic chemistry still such an integral part of engineering and maintenance today?

Threaded fasteners were invented more than 2,000 years ago and are still widely used in machinery design and assembly, although usage is declining. These traditional fastening methods have many flaws; they can selfloosen, particularly under the stress of heat or vibration, resulting in downtime, quality issues, recalls, corrosion and increased maintenance. Regardless of how small the gap, side to side movement of the bolt within the nut caused by operational vibrations will eventually cause the bolt to loosen, with sometimes catastrophic results. Anaerobic threadlockers replace mechanical threadlocking devices and offer tangible benefits in terms of productivity, efficiency and safety. These single component acrylic polymers have an anaerobic cure system that remains in a liquid form until air is absent and contact is made with metal ions. A liquid threadlocker will fill all voids between mating threads and solidifies to form a thermoset plastic that unitises the assembly. Threadlockers also coat the entire thread and are resistant to water, solvents and oils. They serve the dual purpose as sealants and prevent corrosion from liquids, gases and air-born contaminants such as dust which would otherwise compromise bolted assemblies. Clean-up is easy since any excess adhesive remains as an easily wiped-away liquid. Bondloc has an extensive portfolio of threadlocking adhesives, including COSHH free safer products. They have varying differentials in viscosity, strength, temperature resistance, cure speed and flexibility. For more specific or unique applications, formulations can be modified and then manufactured in-house. Either way, to determine the best product to use for the job, three main questions must be asked. What’s the fastener size? Which strength is needed? How frequently will the assembly need to be serviced?

But should we also challenge the efficacy of the products we purchase by asking our suppliers if their published data stacks up? The answer is most definitely, yes. Every adhesive product purchased is underpinned with a technical data sheet and a material safety data sheet. Continual quality testing and benchmarking of products versus competitors is common practice at the Bondloc laboratory by independent technicians. The most recent tests have shown yet again that product performance not only consistently meets the published data but also exceeds its peers’ performance. Bondloc is confident in saying, they won’t be beaten on price or performance. The Bondloc technical team welcome calls from industrial adhesive users to discuss specific projects, challenges, data, free sampling and potential cost savings. Contact the team today and put Bondloc products to the test. Let’s Stick Together. Bondloc UK Ltd

Using Automation to stock Electronic Components A good system for managing electronic parts is essential, no business wants to waste time hunting for components which are required for production projects.

T

he requirement to manage thousands of individual electronic components and manage customer expectations means that smarter solutions are required by the industry. Running high-mix production is labour-intensive. Time is required to manage the flow of components needed for frequent setups and changeovers within the industry and this means high costs in relation to hunting down missing components. This is no mean feat and clarity is required on how best to store, locate, and manage stock. Traditionally storage cupboards were used to stock small components such as Chips (ICs), and other semiconductors in plastic bags. Larger stock such as passives THT capacitors, SMD resistors, THT resisters and SMD reels need a more optimised solution. One of the reasons storage space is such an issue for the electronic industry is the speed of change and keeping up with constant technological evolution. Most electrical component failure is caused by excess temperature, excess current, mechanical shock, or impact. A static charge can impact electronic components to the point of failure. It’s important to have full control over humidity and temperature levels to protect sensitive components. Unit temperatures may range from -25 °C to 60 °C and unit humidity can be reduced by up to 5 %, when necessary. When working with electronics, automation can give you the security to implement solutions that meet industry requirements such as Fire protection, EDS protection, and clean, dust-free storage which in some cases is required.

18|

BD Sensors is a manufacturer of electronic pressure measurement devices and they wanted to modernise their environment and increase productivity. The company moved to an automated model to stock their components and operate a pick and pack process at their production plant. They purchased five automated Kardex Shuttle vertical lift systems which are built across several mezzanine floors for speedier access for storing and retrieval in parallel. They now have a faster picking and retrieval process for their mixed sized/weight components and it’s all controlled by a WMS (Kardex PPG) software system. Today BD Sensors has reached nearly 100% accuracy and the company has increased their number of picks by 50%. They also massively reduced their footprint and were able to reduce the number of operators to two-thirds. The combined solution delivered automated order assignment, batch picking using a multi-user picking strategy with dedicated colour picking and KBS indicator lights for ease of use as well as LED pointers to show exactly where the component to be picked was located. They also utilised special Picking trolley’s with integrated colour picking technology. The move to automation increased their productivity, it released space and the software gave them performance data which is delivering transparency and understanding on their orders and transactions. Extreme temperature or pressure products

and the critical problem of vapour permeability

E

xtreme conditions are more common than you would think, they don’t only occur in extreme environments but also in the tightened seals on many products, the heat of engines or motors and even in the electronics of many devices. Yet they need seals to keep out water vapour, hydrocarbons and other contaminates if they are to continue working, Versaperm can help. Versaperm’s vapour permeability systems can measure how well seals, pipes, electronic enclosures and general materials do this across a wide range of temperatures and pressures, from -80 to 1100C and from 0 to 300bar. Higher ranges can be made available if the demand arises. All materials and seals are affected, often severely, in their task by the combined factors of temperature and pressure. There is a fundamental problem with many engineering seals, enclosures and casings – they don’t work as well as they could or should! Just because a seal keeps out water, grease or other liquids, people think it is working properly. But they forget about vapours, which can pass straight through materials such as seals and sealants, sometimes in great volumes - before condensing on the wrong side and causing problems. The temperature and pressure conditions that are commonly found in the real world can amplify this and extreme conditions make the problem even more critical. As an example, gaskets, seals and O-rings made from silicone, cellulose, EVOH or PVOH are great at keeping liquid water out, but are virtually useless where water vapour is concerned. Numerous products have failed and been recalled for this reason.

O-ring and seal permeability

22|

Permeability of valves seals and connections The Versaperm system uses a mass spectrometer to measure permeability for water vapour, grease, hydrocarbons, aromatics, CO2, solvents and every other vapour / gas in general use. This gives designers and manufacturers the ability to test and effectively eliminate problems across almost all standard and most nonstandard environmental and operational conditions. The system can also simulate diurnal, seasonal and other changes and it achieves results that are accurate in the PPM (Parts per Million) to PPB ranges. It can optionally measure several materials, seals, enclosures, components or products at a single time. Versaperm also runs consultancy and laboratory services which offers advice on permeability in complex cases or where the volume or logistics do not mandate a dedicated instrument.

readings of individual packs by the millisecond. Only possible by using the most advanced ARM processors, this data capture and analytics is a game changer for food factories concerned about product waste and giveaway. Saving valuable time and money, the Raptor introduces an innovative, failsafe, paperless, fully auditable COP test routine. The only known inspection machine on the market to configure every test by retailer and product being inspected, Raptor gives food manufacturers the assurance that test steps are never overridden or bypassed. Using a beacon to alert machine operatives when a test is due, if not performed by the deadline, the Raptor system halts and an alert is generated and sent direct to the factory’s QA or technical manager. For extra cleanliness and tougher hygiene control, Fortress unveils a new tight fitting conveyor and ‘no-tool’ maintenance concept. Overcoming the longstanding industry challenge of loosening belt tension during machine sanitation, in just seconds operators unclip and disconnect the Raptor conveyor motor and lift out the entire conveyor assembly for maintenance and cleaning. Belt tension and alignment are instantly restored when clipped back into place.

All three Raptors also feature customisable swipe touchscreens, allowing users to select the statistical information and trends that are most relevant to their food operation. For 24/7 support and to eliminate machine downtime, every Raptor is fully configured to provide remote and secure access. To book a Raptor online demonstration, please contact sales-uk@fortresstechnology.com

New Plug & Play Metal Additive Manufacturing Technology Available From TLM Laser The latest laser based technology to become available from Bromsgrove based TLM Laser is the new AL-3D Metal 200 additive manufacturing system. This innovative system brings a new dimension to metal additive manufacturing through the use of a cartridge based closed powder circuit. The ability to manufacture high precision components with impressive quality standards combined with unparalleled freedom, in terms of design and geometry, are just a few of the reasons behind the rapid growth of 3D printing. The additive manufacturing process also saves material and resources, by building a component layer by layer as opposed to having it machined from solid. The new AL3D-METAL 200 3D printer encompasses all of these properties and is characterised by its safe, clean and economic powder handling concept. The cartridge based closed powder circuit enhances safe working practices as the operator doesn’t come into contact with the powder at any point throughout the entire printing process. Specially developed for the precision mechanical, medical technology, dental and jewellery industries as well as research and development laboratories, this compact 3D printer offers optimum detail accuracy, precision and maximum safety in handling both the laser and the metal powder. A further characteristic of this system is the ability to produce layers of different material within the same component. This is achieved by stopping the print, changing the material cartridge and then re-starting the printing process.

TF

Automation have just completed the build of a repeat machine of one produced some 15 years ago for Intersurgical’s plant in Lithuania. Intersurgical is a global designer, manufacturer and supplier of a wide range of high-quality medical devices for respiratory support. TF Automation revisited the original design and have basically produced the same machine using the latest technology to laser mark the manufacturer’s logo and product reference on their Hydroguard Mini medical oxygen filters. The filters are autoloaded by robot onto a step-feed conveyor and into the Gravograph Laser Marker which marks both sides of the filter simultaneously with the two pieces of information. The feed-in and output are both to pre-determined amounts, with a filter being laser marked every 5.3 seconds. The new machine was required because of an increase in demand for these types of products in relation to the COVID pandemic. TF Automation worked effectively and quickly with the team at Intersurgical and were able to re-create the existing machine, which incidentally is still in use to support the demand. Intersurgical provide flexible patient solutions for airway management, anaesthesia, critical care and oxygen & aerosol therapy, for use within emergency care, hospitals and also in the home. They adopt an integrated approach to provide the highest standards in design, manufacture, quality and customer care allowing them to respond quickly and effectively to their customers. Tony Hubbert, MD at TF Automation, comments, “We were delighted to build a second laser marker for Intersurgical and also that our original machine is still working well! We are seeing an increase in projects incorporating laser marking for general part identification but also for more specific tracking and traceability requirements too.”

Robot handles castor thousands Suscom Industries, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of components for office furniture and equipment, has recently expanded its fleet of Kawasaki robots part of a successful reshoring programme Located in Wigan, Suscom’s recent addition of another Kawasaki RS20N robot takes the number of Kawasaki units in use at its plant to a total of 8. The company uses the brand exclusively. Seven of the units are Kawasaki’s RS20N with a single, larger, RS50N robot making up the

total. Each robot works 24 hours a day, 5 days a week as Suscom deals with demand. The robots are deployed during the moulding and post-moulding processes of many components and are engaged in a variety of tasks across the shop floor. One of these is

ENGINEERING UPDATE removing completed seat bases from a moulding machine and positioning them onto an adjacent workstation, using vacuum grippers. Another is removing the five-armed star shaped bases of office chairs from the moulding machine and holding them in place, almost upside down, with a three fingered gripper whilst a laser cutter profiles a section of the base to allow the fitting of the gas strut. In order to do this, the RS20N robot must describe a perfect 100mm diameter circular motion as the (fixed) head of the laser cutter sets about creating the required profile. Other tasks undertaken by the robots are varied and include upholstering the mesh onto freshly moulded chair backs and installing the 5 castors into position on the star shaped chair bases. Suscom Technical Director Matthew Kennedy says “Each of the many tasks we use robots for involves a combination of speed, agility and accurate, repeatable precision. In all the years we have operated our Kawasaki robots, we have never had a single problem, nor a moment of unscheduled stoppage time with them”. The company says that its decision to use Kawasaki robots exclusively is based on a proven track record of trouble-free service combined with ease of use by Suscom staff. Ian Hensman, Kawasaki Robotics UK Sales Manager observes “It is good to see Suscom’s success in a competitive market, and to be a part of it. The pandemic has underscored the value of the UK’s manufacturing base and reasserted its vital importance to all consumers. As the sole supplier of robots to Suscom we continue to work closely with them, matching robot technology precisely to their needs. The units at Suscom work a typical 120 hour week with no more than routine maintenance”. All Kawasaki robots in the range are currently available on favourable and flexible leasing terms. “For many SME’s, our leasing programmes open the door to productivity and profit without the penalty of purchase funding up front” concludes Ian Hensman.

NEW LEVEL SWITCHES FOR MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY Ask any operator in a food processing plant - some of the smallest parts of the process, like the sensors doing the ‘simplest’ detection and switching, can cause problems, overspills, feed supply run-outs or long hold-ups – especially when they can’t keep up with the demands of modern production and recipe variants.aa New VEGAPOINT 24 level switches master the sticky and viscous Many food products are developed with a distinctive texture in mind, whether they are "melt-in-your-mouth" like some chocolates, grainy like hummus, tough and chewy, super-sticky, satisfyingly crunchy or intensely super-soft and creamy. As a result of producing all these various textures and tastes, it in-turn increases the demands on the level measurement technology necessary for the consistent production of our favourite flavours and foods.

Light up your life VEGA has developed the new front-flush point level and interface switch VEGAPOINT 24, designed especially for use with challenging switching duties required on very sticky, viscous or abrasive products. Its focus is to provide the greatest possible robustness and reliability in the face of all these diverse ingredients. Even with the strongest build up, you can depend on its effectiveness at detecting the point level, it indicates the process status with a superbright 360° LED ring, that is easily visible from afar.

Out of the box thinking Thanks to this robustness, VEGAPOINT 24 is really quick to deploy, as a plug&-play sensor it can be installed very easily in just a few simple steps. Flexible production systems with frequent and fast product changes really benefit from the fact that it can detect all media utilising the ‘out of the box’ setting, without any adjustment. Users can also take advantage of its extra functions and capabilities with a simple to use, smart phone Appbased Bluetooth wireless connectivity, to access and configure settings like liquid/liquid interface detection or ignoring/detecting foam (VEGA TOOLS App free on iOS or Android). This is also where you can also customise LED colours and/or flashing combinations for process status notifications.

Figure 1 V0EGAPOINT 24 Flush hygienic point level switch suitable for all media out of the box

mixing, conveying and filling are all about efficiency and safety, even with demanding liquids and bulk solids like molasses or homogenised creams," explains Volker Allgaier, Product Manager at VEGA. The front-flush design of VEGAPOINT 24 especially ensures its universal application possibilities. "It means that it can even be installed and operate alongside pigging cleaning systems that can pass safely past its flat measuring tip,” Allgaier emphasises, "we made sure the measuring sensor face is more durable too, we tested this and it even copes with abrasive sandblasting.” This is because the ‘wetted’ measuring part in the process is mainly metal in its construction. “Compared to all-plastic measuring tips”, he concludes, “our extensive tests have shown the service life can be extended by a factor of 4.”

Fits like a glove Another decisive factor is flexibility of use through its versatile process fittings and adaptors. This is a level switch designed to fit in your existing process systems like a glove. This means users can achieve optimum visibility of their processes with the new VEGAPOINT 24 - the relationship between durability, low life-cycle costs, partnered with ease of use and ‘easy to see’ indication, makes it truly groundbreaking for reliable point-level switching. ess space, more output is not surprisingly high on the ‘wish list’ for any forward thinking manufacturer and the ArcWorld standard systems available from YASKAWA are ideal for replacing, or supplementing manual welding required in metal manufacturing applications. These fully integrated systems offer the distinct advantage of being selfcontained, so it’s a bit like buying any machine tool, you choose the size of machine you need and a location to install it and away you go. The YASKAWA ArcWorld HS Micro and RS Mini systems are easy to install, operate and relocate in a small footprint of either 2.3 sq. metres for the Mini, or as little as 1.4 sq. metres for the Micro. Both systems offer the possibility for operators to double their output with up to half the preparation time, compared to manual welding. The Micro system is supplied complete with robot and controller and its hinged door opening provides lots of options even though it’s a very small, compact system. The Mini system has a revolving door and table, which again means maximum flexibility within a compact system. The systems are designed to allow quick changes of jigs, which is crucial in helping to reduce the all-important setup time and improving production output compared to conventional manual welding practices. Furthermore, improved operational consistency by never missing a weld and ensuring the same quality of weld at the end of the shift as at the start, also means reduced ‘spatter’ which improves the capacity for fettling. Both systems incorporate a MOTOMANAR900 robot with YRC1000 controller, a start / stop button panel and fume extraction hood. They also feature a platform and casing with dark green polycarbonate glare shield protection and CE-marking. The Yaskawa Motoman ArcWorld Micro and Mini robotic welding systems are pre-engineered, pre-assembled and shipped ready to weld and represent the latest generation of cost-effective automated solutions for welding applications. They can be configured with your choice of welding power source and are ready to mount your component tooling.

Circuit breakers from renowned brands Protective solutions by the best manufacturers

TME

's extensive range of low voltage circuit breakers ensures that every customer will find the right protection for their electrical installation, whether in a small residential building, a public building or an industrial plant. Renowned manufacturers, such as Eaton Electric, Schneider Electric, ABB, or ETI offer several series of overcurrent switches, RCDs and RCBOs with their electrical and mechanical parameters adapted to the specific industry in order to most effectively protect people against electric shock and electrical equipment and installations against the effects of shortcircuits and overloads.

Protecting your home electrical installation In standard solutions for the protection of electrical installations in residential and infrastructure buildings, basic series with a short-circuit breaking capacity of 6kA, rated currents of 0.5 to 63A and B-, C-, D-type characteristics are usually sufficient. We particularly recommend to our customers the series of overcurrent circuit breakers, such as Eaton HN xPole Home, Schneider K60N i IC60N, ABB S200 and ETI ETIMAT6. When it comes to residual current devices (RCDs), the best choices would be Eaton HNC xPole Home, Schneider IDK, ABB FH200 and ETI EFI with differential current of 30mA, 100mA, 300mA (type AC and A) with rated current of 25A, 40A and 63A. A particularly remarkable and space-saving solution are RCBOs (combined) which combine the functions of an overcurrent circuit breaker and a residual current circuit

breaker in a single device. Eaton HNB xPole Home, Schneider iDPN Vigi, ABB DS200, ETI KZS series are some of the most popular and proven solutions.

Industrial protective solutions Industrial applications, where sinusoidal current waveforms as well as high rated and inrush currents may occur, require more advanced and surge-resistant installation protection. Solutions intended for industrial applications mainly include those series of products which have a minimum breaking capacity of 10 kA, a wider than standard selection of rated currents – even up to 125A, or differential currents – above 500mA, as well as characteristics that are adapted to specific types of load, e.g. the K-type characteristic intended for three-phase motors, where using standard overcurrent circuit breaker may result in unwanted operation due to high inrush currents, or the Z-type characteristic with increased sensitivity, intended for protection of electronics. For applications with higher requirements the most popular series include: Eaton FAZ, Schneider IC60H, ABB S200M and ETI ETIMAT10 in the case of overcurrent breakers, Eaton PFIM, Schneider iID, ABB F200 and the ETI EFI series. With regard to combined breakers we especially recommend Eaton PKNM and Schneider iDPN H Vigi. Also, don’t forget to discover the wide range of protective solutions by SIEMENS, HAGER and LEGRAND which are available directly from our warehouse.

‘Wired for Good’ as AWI celebrates 75 years in business with £1m investment A specialist producer of ‘High Performance’ nickel alloys is celebrating a big birthday in style by targeting international expansion and a £1m investment drive.

Alloy Wire International (AWI) is celebrating 75 years of manufacturing in 2021 and has plans in place to take sales past pre Covid-19 levels to £12m by the end of the year. The company, which employs 30 people at manufacturing sites in the West Midlands and Yorkshire, is also looking to mark the milestone year by launching ‘Wired for Good’, a campaign that will see it boost its work supporting local charities and, importantly, committing to becoming carbon neutral. This means all manufacturing, deliveries and even employee commuting emissions will need to be offset and the firm has partnered with a number of specialist organisations to achieve this, with the focus on woodland creation, solar/wind and sustainability projects. Mark Venables, Managing Director of AWI, commented: “75 years in business is a major achievement and the last twelve months have certainly been some of the most challenging yet, with our staff going above and beyond to support the global fightback against the pandemic. “Despite the challenges, sales have held up well and demand across 15 key market sectors have surged since January 2021 and this bodes well for our big anniversary year.”

46|

He continued: “We’ve got some really big plans for our birthday celebrations, including a £1million investment in new wet drawing machines and increasing our stockholding to 220 tonnes, the latter meaning we are able to offer our unrivalled two-week industry lead times.

in the business, a decision made by existing Chairman Bill Graham and the current Senior Management Team.

“We also wanted to do something different that makes a positive social difference. With sustainability on many people’s agenda, we felt the time was right to become ‘carbon neutral’, a significant commitment when you consider we produce wire and export to over 65 countries.

“2021 is going to be an important time for the business, with R&D activities helping to find new applications for our material,” explained Tom Mander, who was recently named as MD Designate as part of a number of key appointments to the Senior Management Team.

“’Wired for Good’ will govern all of our 75th activities and we’re looking forward to announcing more positive projects in the coming weeks.”

“One example is the rise in demand for our wire being used in Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM), which is also referred to as 3D Metal Printing. WAAM works by melting the wire using an electric arc as the heat source and, unlike the 3D printing powder process, can be used to produce larger components in large quantities.”

Alloy Wire International, which manufactures round, flat and profile wire for more than 5000 customers, was founded in 1946 by John Stockdale in an old ambulance station in Old Hill in the Black Country. The company’s founding principles of ‘manufacturing quality, delivering reliability’ has stood the test of time and still remains a crucial part of how it deals with its global client base, spanning automotive, aerospace, medical, nuclear and oil and gas. Today, the firm is employee-owned with most of the staff owning shares

This inclusive culture has been crucial in helping AWI more than double turnover from £5m to £11m in the last thirteen years.

He concluded: “We have discovered so many new applications for our material over the last seven decades and, by ensuring we have the largest production capacity in our 75-year history, we are in a perfect position to find even more going forward.” For further information, please visit www.alloywire.com or follow Alloy Wire International on LinkedIn

MONITORING VALVE HEALTH THROUGH IIOT By Imtex Controls As the industry begins to explore the potential benefits of embracing plant level digitisation, the opportunity to significantly increase efficiency through effective condition monitoring of equipment is clear. With thousands of valves used on any plant being one of the primary causes for unscheduled production downtime, huge potential savings can be realised through effective performance monitoring.

M

ost plants already have one form of valve condition monitoring device installed, namely the smart valve positioner on control valves. However, few utilise or even realise the diagnostic capabilities of these instruments. Even where plants have tried to use positioners for condition monitoring, operational and knowledge limitations have only afforded minimal benefits. Where automation and instrumentation requirements are relatively low, as is the case with on/off valves that do not require the control functionality of a valve positioner, it can be difficult to justify the time and money involved with installing a smart positioner to provide condition monitoring information. In addition, fitting a smart positioner to an automated on/off valve introduces additional operational issues such as compromised stroking times and increased potential failure modes.

Unfulfilled potential A number of companies have tried to develop bespoke systems for on/off valve applications but they can present the end user with other operational, financial and/or functional implementation issues. They are generally more costly than traditional feedback systems, can require installation of

48|

new wiring and hardware and can have software integration issues. Operationally, these solutions will typically require site personnel to ‘harvest’ data and trained personnel to perform data review. These tasks will often be overlooked or performed un-systematically, resulting in the potential benefits of the system used to not be fully realised. Imagine instead a cost-effective system that enables ‘real time’ reports identifying which valves need attention, to be delivered directly to your inbox or smartphone.

CNS for automated on/ off valves: a wishlist When asked what a CMS (condition monitoring solution) for an automated on/off valve should look like, most plant operators have common desires. First, the system should be simple to install. This should apply to both new installations and, importantly, for retrofit applications as there are vast swathes of valves already installed that would benefit from condition monitoring Also, the system should have no impact on plant control. Any condition monitoring system should not have the potential to compromise safe plant control or operation, preferably working in parallel with DCS/PCS operations.

Furthermore, the system should not require additional wiring. Installing new wiring infrastructure is very complicated and expensive and would make the case for fitting a system, especially in retrofits, difficult to justify. The system should not require additional software within the Process Control Environment. Similar to wiring, introducing additional software into the process control environment can be difficult. Not only can software integration be challenging and expensive, but there is also the potential for security issues to arise which could have disastrous effects.

Clear business case To continue the wishlist, the system should be fully automated. Plant operations teams are busy people, and tasking them with additional work, such as collecting data from valves, is not desirable. As such, any condition monitoring system should be capable of harvesting data automatically and sending it for analysis without the requirement for plant personnel to be involved. Finally, the system should be an extremely cost-effective solution. In an ever more competitive economic environment, pressures on capital budgets are high. Therefore, any condition monitoring solution must be able to demonstrate a clear business case. This means

keeping the additional pressure on capital project budgets to the absolute minimum whilst providing the operational cost benefits that condition monitoring offers.

VDMS Imtex Controls, a valve automation and communication company based in the UK, has recently introduced a valve condition monitoring solution targeted at the on/off valve market that addresses the implementation and operational demands that end users have. The technology, called Valvescan Diagnostic and Monitoring System (VDMS), has been designed to

provide clear condition data for automated on/off valves without tasking the plant level operations team with any additional work plan requirements or creating any potential to compromise plant safety. The two core elements of VDMS are the Valvescan Field Mounted Device (VFMD) and the ValveHealth Diagnostic Application. The VFMD is mounted on the automated valve in the same way as a traditional limit switchbox. The field mounted device gathers data from every valve operation and transmits this data via a cellular network to the cloud. The VFMD is purely a datalogger – it does not have control capability – and is powered using existing wiring

ValveHealth is a cloud-based application that receives data from the VFMD via the cellular network and analyses it automatically. The results of this analysis can be made available to authorised users in a web portal or shared with a wider plant condition monitoring platform as desired. Alerts can also be configured and pushed out to the people that need to know, whether that be key plant personnel or contracted valve service providers. VDMS can be deployed in both green- and brown field applications with minimal additional infrastructure requirements. By comparing current performance signatures with historic ‘as new’ data, the system provides an assessment of the current health of the automated valve assembly with the goal of predicting a ‘time to failure’ value for the valve. Maintenance and pro-active interventions can then be scheduled in advance of any issues. Please contact us for more information: www.imtex-controls.com 08700 340 002

ENGINEERING UPDATE

New pressure instrument release from Kobold Kobold have released the latest version of their electronic digital pressure gauge; model MAN-SC for battery powered, and model MAN-LC for 24Vdc power with IO-link.

O

utwardly, the two versions are similar in appearance and share most of the screen functionality features which are now accessed via capacitive Touchpads, however, depending on the application and use, each instrument version may be defined differently. For example, the battery powered instrument defined as a Digital Pressure Gauge, while the 24Vdc version can be defined as a Digital Pressure Transmitter, which considering the innovative features of each version is rather simplistic, but it goes some way to define the natural application areas of the two versions.

Kobold’s previous Digital Pressure Gauge, the MANSD, remained in production for 23 years, proving a very robust and popular instrument. With that record of robustness and reliability in mind, Kobold carefully developed the new MAN-SC/LC instruments, prioritising these core values, but also incorporating the wishes of customers worldwide to produce a high-quality digital pressure gauge which satisfies traditional user applications, but also reaches out to new industry sectors. A key target requirement in Kobold’s design brief was not to exceed the retail price of the previous model, which for a new innovative electronic instrument product manufactured in Germany was not an easy task for Kobold’s production engineers, however, the retail price remains the same, and we think this offers considerable value for money in the current global marketplace. So what’s new?

54|

The new alpha-numeric 14-segment reflective LC‑display screen is impressive, with a full 5-digit display, and digit height of 16mm.

The electronic screen module can now be rotated in 90ᵒ increments; ideal for side mounted or inverted installations.

The gauge head position can now be radially adjusted after installation for perfect positioning.

Access to the screen options is now by capacitive Touchpads.

An impressive range of measuring units are now accessible for selection from the programming menu, for example; kPa, MPa, bar, mbar, psi, kN, N, torr, inWC, mmWC, inHg, USR (user-defined measuring unit), providing more options than any comparative instrument so far.

Peak memory is featured, as is password protection, and reset to factory setting.

ENGINEERING PDATE

June 2021

Battery life with 9V Lithium is now increased to 22,500 hours (2.5 years).

A zero (tare) function is now more easily accessible from within the menu, ideal for calibration.

By popular request, a rubber protective case cover is now available as an option, ideal for test engineers and vulnerable areas of installation.

Measuring ranges are now available from -1… 0...+1600 Bar, which is impressive.

The range of process connection threads has also been substantially increased and now include metric threads. Additionally, from the options list Kobold are able to assemble diaphragm and hygienic process connections.

Another unique application feature, only available from Kobold, is calculation of Force Value which is included in the programming menu. This is calculated from the measured pressure value and a programmable reference area. There are many industrial applications that will benifit from this feature but the most common request came from the construction test and safety sector for a digital pressure gauge to be included as part of the test equipment for compliance to DIN EN 1090, for example, testing of anchors and fastenings in masonry and concrete to provide conformity assessments and certification in accordance with DIN EN 1090. So why produce a digital pressure gauge with an integral transmitter? The MAN-LC provides so much more than the traditional barrel style digital pressure transmitter such as Kobold’s popular PSD instrument, which followed the industry design trend for compact digital instruments. The most beneficial features of the MANLC are the clarity of the large digital display, and the multiple programmable features of the instrument. So what’s new? •

The new MAN-LC model comes with IO-Link, the only Digital Pressure Gauge worldwide with IOLink. Many of the standard features included in the battery powered MAN-SC model are typical, however, the MAN-LC is 24Vdc powered and therefore further features are included, most noticeable when viewing the LC-display, is a backlit screen which combined with the new large display characters provides a clarity which traditional digital barrel transmitters cannot provide.

Analogue and frequency, plus alarm outputs are standard, and an optional pluggable relay module with 2x potential-free SPDT contacts is available either factory assembled, or as a retrofit kit. This enables a customer to specify a very powerful pressure instrument specification.

Added to these features, the addition of a variety of flanged and diaphragm seal process connections extends the application reach to many industrial applications.

Kobold believe they have answered the most requested technical wishes from their customers worldwide, and in doing so, have produced a class leading digital pressure gauge/transmitter, in line with future Industry 4.0 requirements. Kobold has International sales offices and distributors who will be happy to offer support. For the product datasheet and national contact details: - www.kobold.com

Error Free Retrieval of SMD Reels Rhode and Schwarz an electronics group working across 70+ countries needed to improve their setup processes for populating electronic assembly groups for Surface Mounted Devices (SMDs) with an average of 200 setup processes per hour. The focus was on the availability of the SMD reels to ensure that the changeover went smoothly on populating lines with buffering times avoided during production. To ensure flexibility in the production process they installed automated vertical carousels that were able to ensure fast, simple, and error-free automatic storage and retrieval of the SMD reels for production. This allowed the company maximum flexibility in the production process, which is necessary for the wide range of products and changing batch sizes during production. The vertical carousels allow them to quickly react to changing market needs without any downtime. A total of twelve automated vertical carousels were installed to help organise SMD reel logistics and ensure the smooth set up and removal of the assembly groups during the production process. Two or three employees work on the units at the same time and put the

56|

SMD reels into storage i.e. retrieved and returned them after use. As an added benefit, the process was completely paperless because of the pick-by-voice system. Each operator works at their own pace through individual items of an order. The total fill level of the automated vertical carousels is 90-95%, which is achieved by the flexible way that storage space is allocated depending on space availability. This high-density storage method made it possible to supply four production lines with 10,000 reels per day and populate around 441 million components per year. The automated carousels also connect their warehouse management system software to the company's inventory management of SMD reels in real time to maintain a permanent inventory without stopping production. The advantages were clear for Rhode and Schwarz with a simple, clearly structured picking process and their throughput increased by more than 50% with same number of employees. With 100% error-free retrieval of SMD reels for setup and removal process, storage space fill level at 90-95% storage density and permanent, real-time inventory they achieved their goal.

Based on the paternoster principle the Kardex Megamat RS is an automated vertical carousel that provides quick and precise access to stored goods and is especially suitable for frequently accessed goods, because it conveys the right carrier to the access opening via the shortest possible path. The design of the Megamat RS offers maximum storage space on a minimal footprint. This facilitates efficiently designed work processes and also significantly raises productivity. Optical Modules -

Design & Development Service Optical module and system design and development requires extensive knowledge at both the component and system levels. For any optical module or system development the initial step is to assess the customers application. Drawing upon over 25 years experience Resolve Optics is able to offer an expert service for designing, developing and manufacturing integrated optical modules and systems that perfectly match your application. Mark Pontin, Managing Director of Resolve Optics commented "For an optical module or system project it is important to determine whether you require an imaging or non-imaging design because the performance requirements for each are very different. Optical imaging systems are designed to transfer an image of an object to a detector, such as a camera, sensor or your eye. By comparison, non-imaging optical systems are typically designed to collect, disperse, resize, focus, or collimate light. Following this, the next step is to determine the primary optical parameters of your optical module or system. At this point, we

60|

are ready to start designing an optimised optical module or system for your application. Our optical design and engineering teams have many years experience of creating and producing optimised optical modules and systems designed to meet your specific requirement”. For nearly 30 years, Resolve Optics has successfully developed a growing number of innovative, high performance optical modules and optomechanical systems for industrial partners that require small or high volumes of these custom 'products' or anywhere in between. THERMOPLASTIC VS. THERMOSET David Barnes, Protolabs EMEA’s Injection Moulding Product Manager, explains why thermoplastic and thermoset materials in injection moulding perform differently from each other, with some useful tips on their uses.

T

wo broad categories of plastic materials exist: thermoplastics and thermosets, which are differentiated based on their behaviours in the presence of heat. So perhaps an interesting way to explain the difference between thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers is to consider a cheese omelette! We start with a few eggs, some cheese and a hot pan. The eggs begins as a liquid which, when dropped in the pan, become solid. The cheese, however, begins as a solid, but when heated becomes a viscous liquid. After heating the eggs you can cool them or reheat them but they will never return to their liquid state. They remain solid, just as thermoset polymers do. But if you cool the melted cheese it regains its solid form. Reheat it and it flows again, just like thermoplastics.

Using thermoplastics Keep in mind that even a well-designed part can fail if manufactured from the wrong material. Accordingly, carefully consider factors such as strength, impact resistance, performance at high temperatures, and other elements when selecting thermoplastic materials for injection moulding. In addition, make sure to review properties of common resin types, such as Acetal, Acrylic, high-density Polyethylene, polycarbonate (PC), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene. Consider that if a standard material doesn’t provide everything you need on its own, you may be able to find a blended resin that meets your needs. After all, the material is your part. For example, when polycarbonate and ABS are combined, the new material is stronger and is capable of forming a part more accurately than ABS alone.

62|

Using thermosets Thermosetting polymers include a variety of liquid silicone rubber (LSR) materials. LSR is a common thermoset and is a useful material because of its superior flexibility and heat and chemical resistance. Typical applications include softtouch surfaces, gaskets, and heat insulation. Moulders mix two components of uncured LSR to form a relatively low viscosity ‘liquid rubber’ solution. The material cures in the presence of heat forming a bond that can’t be undone. When working with LSR materials you’ll find a whole set of unique design and material challenges. To meet those challenges, make sure you consider wall and rib thickness, shrink and flash, parting lines, undercuts and part ejection. Ejector pins are not normally used during LSR moulding so parts should be designed so they can be retained on one half of the mould when it’s opened at the end of the moulding cycle. Thermosets do also have their liabilities. In harder forms, thermosetting plastics are not as impact resistant as thermoplastics and can tend to shatter. Finally, every type of material has rules and guidelines so it’s worth exploring all the detail to make sure you choose what’s right for your project. Material decisions are for the designer to make but there is a wealth of information out there to support you in this.

BCN3D TACKLES FILAMENT DEGRADATION WITH GROUNDBREAKING NEW SOLUTION •

The world-class manufacturer continues to innovate and expand its range of 3D printing solutions for the industrial workbench to help businesses across the globe to innovate.

With the filament PA, some mechanical properties improve by 20% with the use of the Smart Cabinet.

S

toring 3D printing filaments has never been so easy, thanks to the new Smart Cabinet from BCN3D – a world leading developer and manufacturer of integrated 3D desktop solutions. A revolutionary new solution that has been developed to preserve filament printability, extend its shelf life, reduce aesthetic defects and avoid costly reprints, the BCN3D Smart Cabinet maintains a constant dry environment around stored spools of filament to protect them from sudden external changes. Bringing a step-change in 3D printing, the Smart Cabinet overcomes the common problem of filament degradation due to humidity, whilst its uninterruptable power supply protects work and minimises the risk of losing a print job because of power outages – all in one easy to use, portable unit. With a growing number of manufacturers and engineers across many sectors now using 3D printing to make parts or create prototypes, this groundbreaking new development will help them save time and money and enhance the quality of the finished product. The first machine of its kind to combine a drying unit and a workbench to conveniently store the printer, the Smart Cabinet is a unique alternative to other drying methods that can often damage and degrade 3D printing filaments, such as PA, TPU, PVA, PLA, BVOH, PET-G and ABS. It safeguards the filaments by keeping them fully enclosed and at an optimum level of humidity to greatly reduce the chances of print failure due to excessive water content. With PA, for instance, some mechanical

64|

properties improve by 20% with the use of the Smart Cabinet. Intelligent, reliable and versatile, the BCN3D Smart Cabinet uses smart drying technology to ensure that filaments are consistently kept at optimal humidity levels, guaranteeing the best results in every print job and protecting against print failure and nozzle clogging. With the new product introductions, in addition to recent investment in the business, BCN3D unlocks a new era in its growth and demonstrates its commitment to providing an innovative and expansive product portfolio, cementing its position as a major player in 3D printing. The BCN3D Smart Cabinet works on the absorption dryer method, alternating between drying cycles and regeneration cycles to maintain a constant dry environment around the stored spools and protect them from sudden external changes. It controls relative humidity inside the air-tight container through a desiccant - in this case, alumina-based pellets – which are open to the dehumidifying environment. By isolating the absorption material from the heating chamber and increasing its temperature, the absorbed humidity is released outside of the chamber and the material is regenerated. After the purge, the desiccant has been refreshed and is ready to collect more moisture. The air-tight container and cyclical internal ventilation through the fan, heat, and valves, means there is no user interaction required. This process effectively keeps the filament dry and in optimal condition

for its use and means that there is never a need to change the desiccant. Eric Pallarés, chief technical officer at BCN3D, says: "To achieve fine, repeatable parts, we need to control the whole printing process, so materials need to be in optimal condition. All materials are sensitive to humidity to a certain degree, but some of them, such as PA, TPU, or BVOH, are particularly affected. For example, in just a few hours on a humid day, a spool of PA can uptake an amount of water that will affect the finished print. “When customers waste time and money on failed or defective PA print jobs, it’s not down to the printer or the profiles, it’s because of the degradation of the materials. So, to really unlock the potential of additive manufacturing, with technical materials beyond PLA, we needed a solution just like the Smart Cabinet. “Furthermore, an increase in 3D printer usage means that printing times also extend. In industrial or lab contexts, where power outages or micro-cuts are common, the Smart Cabinet can help to reduce waste and improve efficiency." The Smart Cabinet is compatible with the Epsilon W50, the Epsilon W27 and the Sigma D25 3D printers. Developed to boost efficiency and minimise the impact of downtime, the Smart Cabinet has an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) to protect against power outages that could ruin hours of printing and cost money. The Smart Cabinet is available in the UK through BCN3D’s UK distributor – 3DGBIRE from today. For more information, please visit www.bcn3d.com.

The new PMD laser line-scan profilers from ifm electronic offer a convenient, cost-effective and easy-to-use solution to the challenge of inline inspection of components and assemblies to detect manufacturing faults. Much more reliable than manual inspection - yet capable of detecting even small and subtle faults - PMD profilers are a fraction of the price of conventional vision systems and can be configured in minutes using just three integrated pushbuttons – no software is required.

ifm delivers quality control without the cost and complications

T

he profilers work by scanning a line across a good sample of the object to be inspected and, using laser time-of-flight technology, storing a profile for this line. Subsequent objects are scanned in the same way and the results are compared with the stored version. If the deviation is greater than a userdefinable limit, the profiler’s good/bad output changes state. The evaluation of the profile covers a specific ‘region of interest’ which again is user definable.

interest and stores a single profile, while the OPD101 supports two regions of interest and stores up to ten profiles. Both versions offer standard switching outputs together with an IO-Link interface. The use of IO-Link in conjunction with the optional ifm Vision Assistant software package provides additional options, including the capture and display of scanned profiles.

Key benefits of this method of operation are that results are unaffected by ambient light levels or by changing distance, over a wide range, between the profiler and the object being inspected. In addition, small faults, such as incorrectly tightening fixings, missing seals and defective or missing machining steps, can easily be detected. The profilers are also invaluable aids for applications such as product sorting and orientation. Currently, ifm’s PMD profilers are offered in two versions. Schaeffler and Siemens to cooperate on intelligent diagnostics for drive systems •

Together with Siemens Large Drives Applications, Schaeffler is advancing the digitisation of industry with a focus on customer benefits

Digital service for automated bearing diagnostics from Schaeffler is now integrated into Siemens’ IIoT platform Sidrive IQ

Bearing condition’s analysis results as part of overall motor health status support informed operation and maintenance decisions to reduce unplanned downtime.

E

lectric motors drive our core industrial processes, and the rolling bearing is their central mechanical component. The bearings experience all of the loads and stresses that occur in the electric motor. Therefore, bearing diagnostics provide a crucial indicator of the overall condition and reliability of a motor. In addition to developing a portfolio of condition monitoring solutions for operators, the automotive and industrial supplier Schaeffler is also working with OEM customers such as Siemens on joint offerings to increase the availability of machinery and equipment. “This partnership between Schaeffler and Siemens is based on a solid foundation of product knowledge and specific expertise. Both companies are playing an instrumental role in driving digitalisation forward in the industry while keeping their entire focus on customer value,” adds Dr. Stefan Spindler, CEO Industrial of Schaeffler AG.

Services seamlessly integrated in one platform The collaboration between Siemens and Schaeffler combines Sidrive IQ – the digital platform for drive systems and solutions from Siemens – with Schaeffler’s decades of experience and expertise in designing, manufacturing, and servicing bearings. Sidrive IQ integrates a number of functionalities into one seamless solution and augments drive systems with AI-based analytics and digital content. For the customer,

The collaboration between Siemens and Schaeffler combines Siemens’ IIoT platform Sidrive IQ with Schaeffler’s decades of experience and expertise in designing, manufacturing, and servicing bearings. (Picture: Siemens)

this means the ability to make better decisions when it comes to operation, maintenance, and maintenance measures for drive systems.

New dimensions of collaboration in the industrial IoT The integration of Schaeffler’s analysis service for automated bearing diagnostics in Sidrive IQ makes it possible to determine the bearing condition with greater certainty and precision. “This cooperation and automated exchange of algorithmbased diagnostic data is one of the first of its kind in the industrial IoT. It’s a great example of a new dimension

of cooperation among established technology companies,” says Hermann Kleinod, CEO of Siemens Large Drives Applications. With the help of well-founded insights and specific information, operators can quickly determine whether the drive system can continue to operate or whether, in the event of impending damage, the bearing needs to be replaced immediately or can wait for the next maintenance interval. This reduces maintenance effort and cost, and most importantly, unplanned and costly downtimes can be prevented.

Do you need support accessing specialist parts? At TFC, we are seeing more and more manufacturing customers request help sourcing specialist parts — components that are custom produced using processes such as CNC machining or cold and hot forging. 2021 is a great opportunity to get UK manufacturing back to its best. We want to do our bit by giving customers every opportunity to access the components they need, including specialist ones. Sometimes a standard “off the shelf” cold formed fastener just isn’t suitable for a specific application and this can be for a multitude of reasons. For example, the part’s sizing, material, finish or technical specifications may be inappropriate for its intended use. But, with our expertise and experience, we can help customers find the solution.

accessing specialist parts, we can draw from our global network of quality assured manufacturing partners. As a result of our strong relationships, we can compare and contrast what is available, enabling us to offer customers competitively priced solutions and a lead time that works for you. Making manufacturing easier

When sourcing specialist parts, the first port of call is often the local machine shop because it is close and convenient. However, this may limit opportunities to drive down costs or shorten lead times, so it may help you to collaborate with a specialist during the sourcing process, ensuring you can always access the parts you need, when you need them.

By incorporating specialist parts into a TFC vendor managed inventory (VMI) service, we can take the pain of managing these potentially problematic and longer lead time parts whilst the customer enjoys all the benefits of a managed system, such as reduced stock holding, improved cash flow, total quality management (TQM) and a streamlined process. Alternatively, TFC can stock in bulk at one of our local distribution centres, ready to be called on schedule as required.

TFC, for example, has over 60 years of experience sourcing components. When a customer needs help

Training and professional tools extend bearing service life A

manufacturer of polystyrene-based insulating products was experiencing frequent failures in the bearings of conveyors which link its machines. However, relatively easy control of the situation arrived following a hands-on NSK training course for maintenance personnel and the adoption of the correct bearing mounting tools. To what extent does the correct mounting of bearings have an influence on their service life? In practice, this factor is often underestimated. The case of an insulation product manufacturer demonstrates that it makes sound economic sense to approach this maintenance task with the utmost professionalism. Alongside other materials, the company processes large quantities of expanded polystyrene, with 3D parts milled from sheet material. The manufacturer transports the material by conveyor systems, with heavy exposure to abrasion and fine dust from the polystyrene. As a result, repeated failures were occurring in the rolling bearings of the conveyors. Although the primary reason for the failures was the dusty and dirty operating environment, another cause was that maintenance personnel did not have proper training on how to handle the bearings and were using conventional, non-dedicated tools to perform the work. Realising the need for correct training, the company asked NSK to deliver a practical course for its maintenance team. In a concise training session, maintenance technicians received instructions on how to mount and dismount bearings correctly and use professional mounting and dismounting tools.

Maintenance personnel are now aware, for example, that extreme cleanliness is essential in order to prevent contamination when mounting the bearings. Also, whenever bearing replacement takes place, there is a clear need to use dedicated NSK tools. The tools carefully apply the necessary forces so as to avoid any damage, never transmitting them across the rolling elements. NSK´s tool set includes bearing extractors that are able to exert a strong pulling force without damaging adjacent components. To subsequently install the replacement bearing, tools are available that support efficient and damage-free cold mounting. For the manufacturer of insulating products, these tools are entirely adequate, since the bearings are relatively small and easily accessible, ultimately making it possible to dispense with hydraulic tools or induction heating devices. Thanks to these measures, the company is enjoying lower labour costs as the time required for dismounting and mounting failed bearings has reduced by a factor of 5.5.
