Linear Motor Development

Over the last few years, Linmot have been developing new modular designs based on their renowned range of high-speed linear motors. This has expanded from replacing pneumatic cylinders to fully integrated modules that are much easier for customers to build directly into machines. On capping and assembly machines for example, the new range of PR02 combined linear rotary motors provide a clean compact unit. Quin Systems, as the Linmot UK distributor, have been directly replacing motor and clutch systems in many capping and assembly applications with great success. Just announced are a new DM01 linear motor module which includes a high-stiffness linear guide. Loads up to 30kg can be directly mounted on the end and the clean design makes it very suitable for food and pharmaceutical applications. The range provides strokes up to 575mm and peak force up to 572N and slider lubrication is not needed. The unique Linmot MagSpring® can be added to provide weight compensation for vertical applications. Two DM01 modules can also be combined to form a 2 axes x/y pick and place system for example.

Sensor feedback With the advent of Industry 4.0, it is becoming increasingly important to bring together automation and real-time analytics through enterprise-wide connectivity. As a result, the new products from Linmot such as the PR02 Linear Rotary family of motors now offer extra features such as torque sensing and force measurement. These can be used in combination with linear and rotary position and velocity measurement for detecting multiple

conditions during capping or assembly for example. They can also be used for monitoring and maintenance purposes. With closed-loop servo control and force and torque sensing throughout, very repeatable and high quality assembly can be achieved. Any poor thread, misalignment or out of tolerance parts can be detected early in the process. It could either be attempted again for example with another screw or cap or rejected before wasting any more time on the assembly. A great advantage with LinMot products is that most of the main PLC networks are available on the drives such as EtherCAT, Profinet, Ethernet/IP, Powerlink and many others. This allows flexibility of control and information feedback to be integrated very easily into almost any control system. With 95mm of range and up to 2m separation, this new compact laser micrometer offers much greater measurement flexibility Precision sensor supplier Micro-Epsilon has extended its optoCONTROL 2520 series of optical laser micrometers with the optoCONTROL 252095, which provides double the measuring range (95mm) of the existing optoCONTROL 2520-46. The increased range allows for measurements on larger diameter parts without the need to use or combine additional sensors.

he optoCONTROL 2520-95 is a compact laser micrometer characterised by its high accuracy, high repeatability and a large measuring range of 95mm. The micrometer is flexible too; measurements can be taken at any position within the light curtain whilst preset optimum distances are selectable in the controller. Due to its high linearity (<± 15µm), high repeatability (≤ 6µm) and measuring speed (2.0 kHz), the sensor is suitable for all applications where large measuring ranges are required. The optoCONTROL 2520 series outputs up to 2,500 measurements values per second depending on the measuring range. Measurement modes such as Edge Tracking, Diameter, Gap and Centre Axis can be selected, whilst the Segment mode allows multiple targets to be measured that are within the optical beam. An option with an angled (90-degree) flat receiver is also available on both ranges for measurements in confined spaces. Configuration of the sensor is performed via the web interface, enabling parameters to be set up including video signal, filter and the various measuring modes. The optoCONTROL 2520 micrometers are equipped with an integral controller and are rated as laser class 1M. Analogue, RS422, Ethernet and EtherCAT outputs are provided

to simplify integration of the sensor into the customer’s own production control environment. Profinet and Ethernet/IP can also be used via the IF2030 interface converters. Glenn Wedgbrow, Business Development Manager at Micro-Epsilon comments: “The optoCONTROL 2520-95 is extremely versatile and so will find applications across many different industry sectors in the UK, from food and pharmaceuticals, to automotive and machine building. The micrometers can be set up in production lines to inspect continuous material or single parts. For example, in strip material processing applications and cutting machines, several strips can be measured simultaneously by using multi-segment measurement. In addition, the sensor is ideal for hose and extruder products, including bars and plastic pipes.”

Wear-free and a long service life All optoCONTROL laser micrometers from Micro-Epsilon work without rotating mirrors and so are completely wear-free. The parallel light curtain is created by using special optics in the light source. High quality components in the receiving optics, including filters and lenses, enable the high accuracy of the micrometers. The optoCONTROL 2520 series of laser micrometers from MicroEpsilon offer high accuracy and measuring rates. The improved linearity, different measuring ranges and variable mounting distances between transmitter and receiver, allow for a wide range of dimensional measurement applications in production control, quality control and inline inspection.

FlyMarker ® mini 85/45 plus: The new battery-operated hand-held marking system convinces with versatility, compactness and power

The new battery-operated handheld marking system is equipped with a marking field of 85 x 45 mm. It combines the strengths of the already existing models FlyMarker ® mini 65/30 and FlyMarker ® mini 120/45 plus in one device. Thus, the compact FlyMarker ® mini 85/45 plus becomes a professional partner for durable and unforgeable markings in the industry. For this reason, the FlyMarker ® mini 85/45 model is given a name extension with the addition "plus". This new development perfectly complements the existing portfolio in the field of battery-powered handheld marking systems. One highlight is the optionally exchangeable strong magnet, which is very easy and quick to exchange thanks to its innovative Plug & Play system. With the use of the extra strong magnet it is possible to create very deep markings remaining visible after subsequent processing steps such as sand blasting or coating. Additionally, the marking force of the solenoid can be adjusted individually to the material and the needed marking depth. With the FlyMarker ® mini 85/45 plus nearly all materials from plastics up to hardened steel can be marked fast and reliable. Among marking characters and numbers, optionally individual company

logos, test symbols or Data Matrix Codes can be marked as well. Two prisms on the positioning plate of the FlyMarker ® mini 85/45 plus help to mark round work pieces very easily (radial and axial). Due to its automatic height compensation from up to 5 mm the marking system guarantees even on uneven work pieces a constant high class marking result. The extremely stable guide system and the robust and durable mechanics of the FlyMarker ® mini 85/45 plus guarantee a marking result of highest quality. The high-quality guide system consists of double-guided linear guides in X and Y direction, which precisely and warp-free creates multi-line markings with constant marking depth over the entire marking field. In comparison to similar systems using a swinging axle this cannot be guaranteed. The robust base with integrated positioning plate additionally provides a high degree of mechanical stability. As an option, the integrated positioning plate can be replaced by an adjustable aluminum positioning plate. With this positioning plate, the FlyMarker ® mini 85/45 plus can be easily and flexibly adapted to customer-specific requirements and devices. Hot materials can also be marked and the marking needle can be immersed into the workpiece. In addition, the stable design of the aluminum positioning plate guarantees an optimal positioning and precise marking results. The compact and break resistant design allows the battery operated FlyMarker ® mini 85/45 plus to be transported from A to B like a conventional cordless screwdriver. This is of great use when big and unmovable work pieces need to be marked. Due to its ergonomic design, the battery driven marking system fits perfectly in the hand and can be used effortless in any position. An additional handle, allows an ergonomic one- or two-hand operation, which prevents any slipping during the marking process. The scope of supply contains two Lithium-Ion-Batteries which enable a completely mobile work and time consuming marking tasks can be done without interruption.

The device software is self-explanatory and intuitive to operate and simplifies the programming of the marking files. The marking commands can be entered quickly and easily via the dirt-resistant and durable keyboard with integrated numeric keys. In addition, the operator software is available in numerous language versions, which makes the operation of the FlyMarker ® mini 85/45 plus easier for users from all over the world. The high resolution LC colour display provides a practical preview function which enables to picture the marking file before the actual marking. Additionally, the FlyMarker ® mini 85/45 plus is equipped with an integrated laser pointer. The laser pointer shows the position of the marking needle and can simulate the marking process. With this incorrect markings can be avoided and are almost impossible. The dot peen marker has a large internal memory that offers enough space for several hundred marking files. Created marking files, fonts or logos can therefore be stored easily and conveniently directly on the device. The transmission of the files can easily be carried out by using the USB-interfaces of the unit. These interfaces can also be used for optional available accessories as for example a barcode scanner. MONITOR AND CONTROL THREE KEY PROCESS VARIABLES – WITH A SINGLE SENSOR Volumetric flow, flow velocity and temperature measurement – three of the most important variables which help to ensure efficient process control. INTRODUCING THE NEW DRIVE CHAIN SOLUTION RANGE The Donghua Chain Group have re-categorised their extensive Drive Chain products into three new ranges to make it easier for customers to identify the right chain for their needs.

FULL STEAM AHEAD FOR REICH COUPLINGS IN THE MARINE SECTOR As for many industries in recent months, there have been significant challenges for those operating within the marine sector. However, unlike some areas of business such as hospitality and retail, where the impact of the pandemic has hit hard across the board, there are sub-sectors of the marine industry which remain positive. Many marine and shipbuilding projects, by their very nature are long term and although impacted by the restrictions brought about by the pandemic, remain in place if delayed somewhat. There are however sub-sectors where, for example, the availability of attractive finance rates has encouraged investment in the commissioning of support vessels for marine renewables projects. Also, the large leisure marine sector, which includes Superyachts, remains largely unaffected by current events. Marine & Industrial Transmissions’ Sales Manager Tom Binns, Reich’s partner within this sector commented: “ We have definitely seen some positive trends in a number of the sub-sectors within marine. In addition to the investments in support vessel’s for renewables, we have also seen an increase in activity with military and defence related projects. Currently we are also bidding for a new project which will represent an investment of over £9 million in nine new vessels for port operations within the UK” Reich’s TOK coupling range, renowned for its robust design and reliability, is at the heart of many of the coupling and driveline projects undertaken by MIT. Georg UK Partner with WMG, University of Warwick to Test Battery Technology for Electric Vehicles Heinrich Georg (UK) Limited has partnered with WMG, University of Warwick to design and build a Test Rig to test battery powered small motor units for use in light vehicle transport. The Test Rig will be used for research & development and quality assessment of off-the-shelf motors, with the main focus of the project being urban mobility projects (small electric vehicles). Martin Summers, Special Purpose Machine Manager at Georg UK, explains: “The design of the Test Rig aims to control the application of force profile that replicates what would precisely be happening to the motor when used in the real world. “To understand this, we have to generate a similar load profile to that seen when the unit is in active service. This requires an understanding of changes in power from active to reactive, ie the generation of power when under load (for example when driving up an incline), and then the regeneration of power when braking or going down an incline and what effect this has on the on-board battery and its charging capability.” Built within the Test Rig is sophisticated power analyser systems to record data and feed-back via a closed loop system using a cause and effect process. To achieve an effective closed loop system, Georg UK have used National Instruments hardware combined with their unique, in-house designed software package to perform those exact requirements. The software has been developed following many years’ experience building regeneration rigs for the rail industry.

Engineering Update – End of Year Review

TF Automation have over 40 years’ experience in the design, engineering and manufacturing of process automation solutions, supporting a wide range of manufacturing industries and have just completed another successful year. It has been an interesting and challenging year for all and at TF Automation, we are no exception. We remained fully open during lockdown to support our varied customer base working in critical industries, both with bespoke machine build projects and the supply of pneumatics and industrial components. Our testing and manual workstation projects have continued at a pace this year, supporting our Tier 1 and 2 suppliers to the automotive industry. We have also engineered machines for clients in the textile, aerospace, motor sport and industrial sectors, with laser marking, pick-and-place, product testing, hot air welding and plasma treatment machines. Plas ma t rea t m e n t is n e w technology for TF Automation and we were commissioned by Kostal, with whom we have a very longstanding partnership, to design and build two plasma treat machines to address the increase in demand for cleaning new automotive switch products. The company has also made some significant investment this year taking delivery of a new 3Axis CNC Milling Machine to add additional capacity to production and enable the 3-dimensional machining increasingly required by its customer base. The new machine ensures that our machining capabilities are more innovative, versatile and flexible, enabling us to support customers with their on-going requirements.

TF Automation plays a vital role in supporting its local student community in Bradford and took part in Bradford Manufacturing Weeks again this year. This innovative initiative was set up by the Chamber of Commerce to engage local schools with local manufacturers to showcase both manufacturing and engineering as valid careers. Simon Asbury new UK Managing Director, HARTING Ltd Simon Asbury has worked in the electronics and electrical sector since 1988, gaining experience in a range of engineering and sales roles. He joined HARTING Ltd in 1997 as a Sales Engineer, before taking over management of HARTING’s distributors. In 2001 he became Field Sales Manager, with responsibility for the electrical arm of the business, before a promotion to Director of Sales and Market Development in 2007. Since 2018, he has held the position of Director of Sales and Marketing. Following the announcement, Simon commented; “I would like to begin by thanking Peter for his successful time as Managing Director of HARTING Ltd; myself and the team wish him a long and healthy retirement. I am delighted to be appointed as the next Managing Director of HARTING Ltd. In-line Flow Meters for Pure Water Dispensing Titan Enterprises have been offering in-line flow meters for dispensing liquids such as pure water for nearly 40 years. A clean connection for the food and beverage industry The newest addition to the HARTING Han® portfolio is the Han® F+B, a range of connectors which have been specially designed for the requirements of the food processing, bottling and packaging industries. Within these sectors, hygiene and safety are key considerations, meaning machines and equipment must be both easy to clean and designed so dirt pockets and bacteria cannot accumulate. The Han® F+B has been specifically developed as a suitable product for the food zone and splash zone and there are several innovations which make it the ideal solution. Firstly, all hoods, housings and seals are IP69K rated, so the connections are fully protected and resistant to the water jets used to clean equipment. They also have large nooks and surfaces in accordance with the guidelines of the European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group (EHEDG), which allows cleaning and disinfecting agents to flow unhindered. The range is Ecolab approved, so it is resistant to the highly aggressive cleaning agents used in the food and splash zones. As the housings are constructed from polypropylene, they conform to the directives of FDA 21. All surfaces also have a smooth finish, which prevents impurities and bacteria from accumulating, whilst the portfolio can function in a wide temperature range from -40 to +125° C. As well as hygiene and safety concerns, HARTING have also considered the impact of machine downtimes, designing in features which keep disruptions on the production line down to a minimum. With the Han® F+B, operators do not need to open any cable glands on the control cabinet in order to decouple field devices, eliminating the complex disconnecting and reconfiguring of fixed wiring. This solution also allows for fast replacement of defective components and a more efficient configuration when changing components, allowing businesses to shorten set-up times and reduce production stoppages.

The housings can be used with hybrid contact inserts for all types of industrial transmission, including data, signal and power, a versatile connector concept which makes it possible to configure future-proof machine design for processing units, including Ethernet. Rittal’s VX25 Ri4Power Panels Deliver “Impressive” Solution for Renewable Energy Project Rittal was approached by Powerfish, a Scottish-based panel builder and electrical engineering business, with a brief to design and deliver robust, flexible, and easy-toinstall panels for a renewable energy customer. All the consultations, as well as the design work on the panels, were done remotely, in accordance with COVID-19 restrictions. The copper connections were created in-house from drawings produced by Rittal’s online configurator, saving the client both time and money. The project was turned around quickly while still maintaining Rittal’s high standards across engineering and customer service. Powerfish is a progressive electrical engineering and panel building company based in Perth, Scotland. Its engineering and manufacturing facility delivers a full range of engineering capabilities for the power generation and controls industry. The company’s G99 control system provides clients with a remote monitoring and a web interface for control and automation systems; access is provided through proprietary Powerfish® monitoring and datalogging software. Powerfish approached Rittal about building three new panels for three new hydro-turbine generators at a site in the Scottish Highlands. The panels needed to accommodate large 400mm incoming cables from below via a trench. They also needed sufficient space within the panels to house new voltage transformers and G99 control equipment. Unfortunately, COVID-19 restrictions on movement meant that the panels had to be constructed without a site visit from a Rittal engineer, however, the VX25 Ri4Power was the obvious, ideal choice for this project. The ACB connections were created in-house by Powerfish from drawings produced via Rittal’s online configurator. Connection clamps were used for a voltage reference, avoiding any drilling of the busbar; the clamp simply clips on the copper bar. Added to which, VX25 Ri4Power has a robust welded frame, wellsuited to large power applications and (as indicated above) they are easy to install. Powerfish provided a written specification from which a detailed design and panel layout was completed for two types of panel: the 2500 amp system and the 2000 amp system. The PLC section contained the G99 controls as required from the local DNO company. The entire panel is automated and, of course, they can be monitored remotely through the Powerfish software. The ACB section and the outgoing section have a total of 24 x 400mm2 cables, however, the VX25 Ri4Power MAXI PLS incoming busbar system meant all the connections were easy to manage.

Grayson Thermal Systems’ new solution provides extra Covid-19 protection to London bus drivers A Birmingham manufacturing specialist has helped to further protect London bus drivers against Covid-19 after developing a new way of pushing air around their cabs.

C

ommissioned by Transport for London (TfL) and taking expert advice from University College London (UCL), Grayson Thermal Systems (GTS) came up with a way of changing air conditioning recirculating systems into units that circulate fresh air into the driver’s cab from outside the vehicle.

Grayson Thermal Systems, which designs, manufactures and supplies engine cooling, heating and air conditioning products to customers around the globe, created a new positive air retrofit unit for each vehicle type and then set about a capacity plan to convert each of the 1200 vehicles in London.

The company’s team of engineers took just three weeks to come up with the prototype solution and was then invited by eight London fleet operating companies to convert more than 1200 buses over a two-month period, meaning all 9,300 buses in London’s fleet meet TfL’s strict driver safety guidance and new specifications.

Six centres were set-up across London and a fifteen-strong team of engineers from GTS and Alexander Dennis were trained up for the project, the latter proving a perfect fit as over 1000 of the buses were their models.

The work joins a raft of measures taken by TfL to protect bus drivers against Covid-19, including improving the screen around the drivers’ cabs to prevent the virus entering the cab area and a rigorous cleaning regime. Ian Hateley, Group Aftermarket Director at GTS, explained: “The loss of London bus drivers to the pandemic is tragic and we were pleased to be part of a solution to build on TfL’s existing safety measures to reduce the potential spread of the virus. “We looked at our existing air conditioning systems and developed a way of converting them so that they created positive pressure in the enclosed driver cabin, forcing existing air out and replacing it with air from outside the bus. “Now complete, the modification gives in excess of 100 air changes per hour within the driver cabin and ensures that a wider initiative to seal the driver cabin away from passengers is enhanced, as air is no longer moving from the entrance into the cab area.”

A specialist scaffolding gantry was designed and built by partner London Network Scaffolding so experts could work on the roof of the vehicles whilst being completely secure. They completed a weekly inspection process on all structures to ensure safety was paramount. All 1200 air conditioning systems were additionally health checked upon modification and a triage system was set up to rectify any vehicles where faults were identified within the GTS standard 5-year warranty. “This was a massive logistical task and one that we overcome as every partner in the project was fully on board, so that we could make the changes as quickly as possible and further protect London bus drivers who are doing a great job. In the end, the final project delivery came in ahead of plan for every site,” continued Ian.

“I’m very proud of how our designers and engineers came up with a solution and delivered it in a very strict timeframe, playing a small but important role in helping to combat the spread of Covid-19.”

Deployment of these digital solutions will be even more imperative for building supply chain resilience. Being able to zoom in on production bottlenecks, reconfigure supply chains and swiftly identify and respond to issues with agility can be expedited. Checking that metal detection systems are failsafe forms part of this agenda. Frequently, data from a production line is fed back to a common collection system.

However, it is critical to ensure the data that being sent is readable and compatible by whatever the plant is using. Here, food processors can benefit from having equipment adapted to common OPC standards. Doing so means that they can then collect and export data, which can be used to inform future and sensible production decisions. Included as standard on all Stealth and Interceptor metal detectors, Contact Reporter Software from Fortress uses a powerful back-end SQL database to monitor activity and generate reports in either PDF or Excel format. Auditor-approved, reports can be selected for a specific production line and/or time period. New wireless torque technology Sensor Technology has launched a new range of non-contact torque sensors based on a full four element strain gauge bridge design, complementing its existing non-contact sensors that use surface acoustic wave (SAW) detection. Sensors Technology’s new TorqSense SGR510/520 series torque sensor is based on a full four element strain gauge bridge design.

the signal due to shaft rotation and generates a digital sample rate of 4000 samples per second. Other features include an optional adjustable moving average filter, power supply range from 12VDC to 32VDC, user configurable analogue output voltages, a choice of RS232 communications, USB interface, CAN bus interface, external Ethernet gateway, and LabView virtual instruments. “For ease of use there is a built-in test function,” says Mark, who summarises the new TorqSense SGR510/520 with: “Most torque sensors require the use of slip rings to transfer torque readings from the rotating shaft to the static readout. These are noisy in use, slow and fiddly to set up and, as wearing parts, are not always reliable.

esignated the TorqSense SGR510/520 series, the new units have a 250% overrange reading capacity, allowing sudden spikes in torque to be measured and recorded accurately. The design also compensates for any extraneous forces, such as bending moments, inadvertently applied to the sensor, improves sensitivity and has a wide temperature tolerance. The bridge is essentially four strain gauges glued onto the shaft that is to be monitored in a square formation set at 45deg to the axis of rotation. Thus, when torque is applied to the shaft two gauges are stretched into tension and two go into compression. A rotor mounted ultra-miniature microcontroller, powered by an inductive coil, measures the differential values in each strain gauge and transmits them back to the stator digitally, via the same coil. The SGR510/520 series transducers then use state of the art strain gauge signal conditioning techniques to provide a high bandwidth, low cost torque measuring solution with high overrange and overload capabilities. “This design gives the TorqSense SGR510/520 several significant

advantages over conventional torque sensors,” says Mark Ingham of Sensor Technology. “Firstly, it eliminates the sort of noise pickup and signal corruption associated with slip ring and other analogue methods of transferring torque data from rotor to stator.” Mark explains that external noise pickup into the wiring is virtually eliminated due to the short distance between the strain gauge elements and the rotor’s measuring circuits. Further, multipoint calibration reduces any linearity errors within the sensor. He goes on to say that the large functional overrange capability allows the peaks of a torque signal to be captured faithfully without any clipping when operating the sensor close to its full-scale rating. This, combined with a mechanical overload capability of over 400%, make the SGR510/520 series torque sensor a very robust torque measuring solution. The measuring range of the SGR series is 1Nm to 500Nm (with models up to 13000Nm available shortly), accurate to +/-0.1% and with a resolution to +/0.01% of the transducer’s full scale The digital transmission between rotor and stator cuts out all cyclic fluctuation of

Water jetting operatives in line for a competent skills boost A new level 2 competent water jetting qualification will allow contractors to enhance critically important skills and support career pathways, says the Water Jetting Association (WJA). The WJA says the new qualification will give greater assurance that water jetting services, including high and ultra high pressure jetting and sewer cleaning, are of a high standard. It will overcome the limitations of a current NVQ in water jetting by combining training and assessment, giving operatives a high quality learning experience. WJA Director David Kennedy said: “The new WJA level 2 competent water jetting qualification will be 50% training and 50% assessment, while the current NVQ is just assessment. “It introduces a new proof of competence. This is good for the operative, the contractor and for the client as it gives greater assurance over service quality, productivity, and safety. “The qualification allows water jetting

operatives to hold a WJA competency card and will qualify successful candidates for a CSCS skills card.” The WJA says the qualification will also help improve safety, pointing to the outcome of the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) prosecution following the most recent water jetting fatality in the UK in 2017. A contractor, which had not been a WJA member, was fined £2m ordered to pay £30,000 in costs after pleading guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. A worker suffered a fatal injury while cleaning pipes at the paint shop of a large manufacturing facility with a hand-held flexible jetting lance. The investigating HSE inspector urged contractors to consult the WJA’s codes of practice which

provide clear safety guidelines relating to flexible lances. David Kennedy said: “The WJA’s two codes of practice are designed specifically to prevent such incidents. However, training and skills development is another critical component, to ensure our codes of practice are followed. “The WJA Level 2 competent water jetting qualification will help instil skills and attitudes that safeguard against hazardous behaviours and support positive cultures.” To join the course, accredited by City & Guilds, operatives must pass the one-day WJA safety awareness course plus the one-day surface preparation practical module and one other practical module. They then undergo work-based assessment for at least one year. Operatives will complete a workbook in a process overseen by WJAapproved assessors. Once, successfully completed, it is a qualification for life. The operative must still follow WJA procedure by retaking the safety awareness course every three years. Electrostatically Recovering Copper Wire A combination of an ElectroStatic Separator and a Metal Separation Module is enabling the recovery of fine copper and other metals from a waste product at a UK metal recycling company. Bunting is one of the world’s leading designers and manufacturers of metal separators for the recycling and waste industries with European manufacturing and product testing facilities just outside Birmingham in the United Kingdom. The Bunting ElectroStatic Separator significantly enhances the ability to recover fine metals such as copper wire. In this project, the fine feed material is from airextraction post-shredding; a mix normally classified as waste despite the valuable metal content. Prior to ordering the equipment, controlled tests conducted at Bunting’s Customer Experience Centre determined that a three-stage separation process would enable high levels of metal recovery and purity.

On site, between one and two tonnes per hour of the metal mix initially passes through the Metal Separation Module before the final stage of ElectroStatic Separation. The Metal Separation Module consists of a Ferrite Drum Magnet, Vibratory Feeder and high-intensity Rare Earth Roll Separator. The Ferrite Drum Magnet removes strong magnetic metal with the remaining mix passing onto the Vibratory Feeder. This regulates and presents an even, monolayer of material onto the belt of the Rare Earth Roll Separator. The Rare Earth Roll Separator has a belt feeding material onto a head pulley constructed from highstrength neodymium rare earth magnets. As material passes over the head roll, weakly magnetic metals are attracted to the radial highintensity field and held on the

belt before being deposited underneath. A strategically placed splitter enables the separation of the attracted metals (including fragmented stainless-steel) from other non-magnetic materials (e.g. fine copper wire and aluminium). This non-magnetic metal mix passes onto the third separation stage to recover fine copper wire at a feed rate of approximately one tonne per hour. The ElectroStatic Separator produces a separation by exploiting

the difference in electrical conductivity between various materials. This enables the recovery of metals such as fine copper wire. In this project, the recovered copper wire has a purity of +95%. Explosion isolation system Q-Bic wins the Red Dot Design Award When it comes to the winners of design awards, most people think of futuristic automobiles, furnishings or everyday objects. However, for the first time, protective systems have now also received an award. Two in-house developments from the German safety manufacturer REMBE, known as the world market leader in the explosion safety scene, have received the Red Dot Design Award: the Q-Bic extinguishing barrier and the design study for a new generation of the EXKOP quench valve, both products for explosion isolation. Radiation Hard Lenses for Satellite UHD Video Cameras Resolve Optics has supplied video streaming specialists - Sen (Didcot, UK) with radiation hard lenses for their satellite-based Ultra-High Definition (UHD) video cameras. Sen launched its first set of UHD video cameras into space in 2019 and successfully demonstrated the excellent performance of its video streaming platform. The next step in Sen’s plan is to launch its own satellite constellation so that it has full control over its live data stream. To make technology work in space is not straight forward, with both mechanical and environmental challenges, such as extreme temperature changes and radiation that can damage electronics and hardware. Space is also very mass sensitive because each gram costs money to launch. As a consequence,

MICRO DOSING PUMPS PLAYING VITAL ROLE IN AUTOMATED ANALYSIS DEVICES TESTING AGAINST CORONA VIRUS Highly automated analysis devices have become commonplace in many scientific and biotech applications, for example being used as the essential basis for extensive test capacities for the Corona virus. As a result of the development of these parallel and faster processes, automation has significantly increased the number of tests, saving manpower whilst ensuring process reliability. Quantum supports refit of $300m Superyacht with Conversion of Shore Mains We received a request from a European company specialising in Superyacht Refits, they had a 140 meter Superyacht, worth $300 million, coming into dock to undertake important required works and needed to convert shore supply to be able to carry out the project.

They needed to convert shore supply at 400V, 50 Hz to 440V, 60 Hz with a total demand of 1200Amps continuous during full load periods. Furthermore, this had to be built, tested and shipped to site (in France) within a 4-week lead time to accommodate the vessel coming into dry dock for its required works. Converting shore mains instead of using Diesel Generators have several benefits, including; more cost effective, greener and cleaner (no air pollution), quieter (no diesel engine noise), no fuel storage required and a more stable and reliable solution for the work required. Quantum Controls were the only company worldwide that could carry out the request in the proposed time scale. We were able to supply all the equipment required from our own extensive hire fleet (largest known in Europe) utilising our 1200KW VSD and sine filter solution, combined with step up transformer to convert the shore supply to ship demand. The 40ft container housing the system was designed and built by our own

SIP’S ULTRA HIGHPRECISION BORING MARKET STANDS THE TEST OF TIME! The five machines under construction at SIP’s Vuadens (Switzerland) factory

Starrag Group company SIP is currently assembling a series of ultra high-precision jig boring machines destined for installation by multiple customers active in the aerospace industry. The five machines – comprising a four-axis horizontal model and the remainder three-/five-axis vertical designs – are scheduled for installation and commissioning during the second half of 2021. These SIP machines will be used to produce a range of different workpieces including gearboxes, structural components and satellite guidance systems. They have been chosen by customers because of their ability to consistently produce ultra high-precision, right-first-time results over many years, with no material wastage – even after resetting to suit different/ redesigned workpieces. The machines’ impressive build qualities and performance specifications will ensure these demands are met. Based on a closed rigid frame supported on three points, the machines’ extreme levels of high accuracy – for example, in some cases positioning repeatability is quoted as close to 1 micron - is also endeared by SIP’s renowned hand scraping of features such as machine bases, linear guideways and spindle heads.

The quartet of vertical machines under construction will be able to accommodate workpieces weighing ranging from 2,500 to 4,000 kgs, and have clamping surfaces from 1,200 mm by 900 mm to 1,700 mm by 1,200 mm. The horizontal machine will handle components weighing up to 4,000 kgs on a clamping surface of 1,200 mm by 1,200 mm. In all cases, the standard spindle rating is 6,000 revs/min, but optional 8,000 revs/min spindles are available. All of the vertical models have automatic tool changers, and two have high-pressure through-coolant. Siemens Virtual Commissioning tools via Connected Curriculum comes to Middlesex University’s Mechatronics students’ rescue in completing their onsite project remotely

Siemens technology helped postgraduate MSc Mechatronic Systems Engineering students to complete a vital academic project after Covid-19 closed the campus and stopped them accessing any physical equipment in their labs. The students, who were initially concerned about their ability to complete their project, were impressed by the versatility of the solution.

A challenge common to many in industry because of the pandemic, the students’ only option was to design, develop, and test a solution in the virtual world before deploying and commissioning it remotely. In this case to go from physical to virtual commissioning of their assessment task “prototype a conveyor belt system that acts as a segue between a robot arm and a Festo CP Factory”. To prepare students for a future where digital and advanced manufacturing technologies were combined, Siemens introduced its innovative Connected Curriculum initiative in 2019 in partnership with Festo, a global leader in automation and technical training. Connected Curriculum bundles Industrial hardware and software with simulation environments, data, curriculum examples, case studies, and real-life problem-solving tutorials. The Initative was created because the rapid pace of technology development means the only way academia can keep-up is by partnering

more closely with industry. Steve Jones, the lead for Connected Curriculum program at Siemens, commented: “It was a challenging assignment, but one that these students will actually face in industry. In Siemens we see these challenges every day and Connected Curriculum is our way of helping the next generation of graduates have a head start by working on real world problems with real world tools”. Luke Bennett, Associate Lecturer in Design Engineering at Middlesex University, said: “This is the first time we applied the remote solution. The main advantage was its phenomenal connectivity. The system allowed connectivity to different technologies and hardware and software. We can use these digital techniques again for giving access to a much wider number of students to be able to get access to a system like this, particularly using Mindsphere. We can also use this as a vehicle to train undergraduates in terms of

being able to model digital twins.” According to Bennett, the main challenge was access to hardware, a key requirement for any student. But thanks to Connected Curriculum, they could get access to hardware remotely. The students chose to use Siemens NX Mechatonrics Concept Designer with TIA Portal and PLCSim advanced to produce a ‘digital twin’ of their solution, which mirrored exactly the physical hardware in the inaccessible labs. Professor Mehmet Karamanoglu, Head of Department of Design Engineering and Mathematics, said: “It’s been a rewarding learning curve for all parties involved. I was delighted by the results, especially since the students benefitted greatly. I imagine the prototype will be used for other ongoing projects, but no specific plans yet. We believe the bespoke layer that the prototype has given us will certainly open up new possibilities across sectors.”

Chung Hing Woo, a 43-yearold Malaysian student of the Mechatronics course, said: “It was amazing that we got to be familiar with hardware and software using solutions from Siemens and Festo. We could build our confidence in handling mechatronics-related prototyping and system integration involving different systems packages.” Naresh Bandlamudi from India said: “I gained a lot under the mentorship of our tutor, Luke Bennett. Our group project was a huge success. I was impressed by the Siemens NX Simulation software that made our work easy. I am sure that the knowledge I have gained will empower me to achieve great heights in my career.” Shumaila Ansari from India who aims to be a design engineer in automobile and aircraft industries, said: “The project we completed with the help of Siemens and Festo solutions is a remarkable achievement, especially during Covid-19 restrictions. The Siemens solution made concept designing and product designing simpler.” Connected Curriculum is a solution that is available to all universities and is part of a package of support from Siemens to help bring industrial insight and experience to all learners.

Telsonic’s HandyStar Energy Flexible ultrasonic technology for prototypes and production The benefits that ultrasonic technology brings to a broad spectrum of joining and cutting applications, is leading many manufacturers to transition from other methods to the ultrasonic process. Virtual and real world united Digital engineering offers enormous potential for efficiency in mechanical engineering - all the more so, the earlier the right course is set More flexible, more powerful machines and plants not only require more elaborate control programs, but the development process is also becoming increasingly complex. Digital engineering already provides relief here today, and the positive effects will be even greater in the future. One of the central tools for digital engineering is the EASY System Designer, which covers the first engineering steps such as idea, design, and concrete development. With this web-based tool, all persons involved in the planning process from the various disciplines can carry out the complete planning of automation

solutions, from the controller to the drive technology, including the necessary application software. Based on integrated intelligence, the tool checks the developed system solution regarding its feasibility and documents everything necessary for the people involved in the engineering process. This saves valuable planning time, shortens the decision-making process, and reduces the risks in the project. It is then possible to prepare a PLC program based on the planned system solution. The machine structure, selected hardware components and software modules as well as the application parameters and other relevant project data are available to the programmer in his engineering environment. This enables him to finalize the PLC program more efficiently and to get the machine running much faster. The information that is generated and collected in the digital twin is available in the following lifecycle phases. Suitable interfaces ensure that third-party tools for simulation and virtual commissioning can also access it. With these options, errors in the development process can be detected and corrected more quickly, and the time required for delivery and commissioning is significantly reduced. Central mosaic stone of digitalization The digital twin has arrived in reality and offers real support in industrial automation. With its single point of information approach, standardized data model and data access, it is also the basis for the use of cloud services, which contribute to the optimization of production processes, through to the intelligent evaluation of operating data from the drives, which makes additional sensors unnecessary. And finally, it increases the flexibility of plants in which entire production modules can be easily exchanged via Plug & Produce.

Deritend eyes £1m revenue boost after signing IESA partnership A leading engineering solutions provider has been announced as a preferred supplier to IESA in a deal that could be worth up to £1m per year. Deritend Group, which recently completed a major relocation project to larger facilities in West Bromwich, has completed the quality assurance exercise required to be listed in the Motor and Gearbox category. This means the firm will now be part of the global outsourcing specialist’s central list of suppliers that companies like Astra Zeneca, Bentley, 2 Sisters Food Group, Michelin and Molson Coors use for their maintenance, repair and operational (MRO) requirements. It is the result of a year-long discussion, a number of assessments and the creation of a specialist team to respond to enquiries within 24 hours and provide immediate technical support and access to industry-leading equipment and solutions. Real-Time Monitoring of HPLC Pump Performance TESTA Analytical Solutions has published a technical report that evaluates an exciting new liquid flowmeter device designed to provide continuous real-time monitoring of the pump flow rate of any liquid chromatography system.

H

igh Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) is nowadays one of the most widely used techniques in analytical chemistry. The range of applications soluble using HPLC covers a vast range of sample types, concentrations and compositions. However, all HPLC separations have one detail in common: they are reliant on a stable and constant flow rate of solvent and by this they all require constant HPLC pump performance. This technical report describes the shortfalls of traditional flow measurement techniques and demonstrates how a novel method of continuous monitoring of flow rate can provide real-time validation of the total HPLC system performance and as such, improve reliability of results. Introduced in 2020, the TESTA Analytical Liquid Chromatography Flowmeter is based around a thermal flow sensor that is not only extremely accurate, sensitive and high-resolution – but it also offers the advantage of being non-invasive. ALLOYED ACQUIRES ELECTRO-THERMAL MECHANICAL TESTING (ETMT) MACHINE Alloyed (formerly OxMet Technologies) brings together the advanced technology brands Alloys-By-Design (ABD), Betatype, and Alloyed Digital Manufacture (ADM) and provides a compelling offering for optimising advanced digital metal manufacturing applications. Today the company is delighted to announce the acquisition of an Electro-Thermal Mechanical Testing (ETMT) machine, and so becomes one of the only private companies globally to have this technology in-house for the benefit of its customers. The £300K investment in the ETMT machine is strategically very important for Alloyed, and the technology resides in its 1000 m2 laboratory in Oxford, U.K. where metal research, testing and characterisation takes place. previously only been possible through the agency of a number of different testing companies using a variety of technologies. The ETMT machine can perform tensile and compression tests, creep tests (also called stress-rupture tests), and fatigue tests. Tests can be undertaken in air, vacuum, or foreign gases such as Argon. The temperature of the sample being tested is controlled by the Joule effect, meaning that temperatures in excess of 1000°C can be attained. The ETMT machine can also quickly heat and cool samples, affording the ability to cycle the temperature or perform in-situ heat treatments. Guetard continues, “At Alloyed, we have equipped the ETMT with a state-of-the-art digital image correlation (DIC) system, which allows us to optically measure strain on the sample during testing. The machine is well suited for miniature test specimens, which allows us to obtain site-specific mechanical properties from large parts such as forgings. We have also found it very valuable in measuring the properties of fine additively manufactured structures like lattices or thin walls.
